Schlaubetal Nature Park is a paradise for hikers in the state of Brandenburg, Central Germany. Here, the Schlaube river carves its way through valleys up to 30 metres (100 ft) deep, irrigates moors, and flows through lakes, ponds and peaceful meadows until it flows into the Oder-Spree Canal near the town of Müllrose.
The Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) is a wonderful route along the fairytale-like Schlaubetal valley and past the former water mills that were powered by the small river. The hike in the Schlaubetal valley is wonderfully complemented by a generous detour into the equally picturesque Dorche valley, with a visit to the Schwerzko mill and the baroque Neuzelle Abbey.
The 87-kilometre (54 mi) loop takes you through this wonderful landscape in five stages ranging from 13 to 29 kilometres (8 - 18 mi) in length. The starting point is the small town of Müllrose, southeast of Berlin and almost on the Polish border.
Müllrose is easily accessible by train and car. During the hike itself, the only train connection is in Neuzelle, otherwise most places are served by bus. However, check the timetables to avoid a lengthy wait.
There are several places to stay and to stop for refreshments along the route; you’ll find more information in the Tour descriptions. I recommend booking in advance. You should pack enough drinks and snacks for the hike itself. Sturdy shoes are always advisable and weatherproof clothing belongs in every rucksack. And don't forget your camera.
