The Düben Heath Nature Park stretches north-east of Leipzig across parts of two German states: Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. In this hilly landscape that was sculpted in the Ice Age, you’ll hike through the largest mixed forest in Central Germany. You’ll pass through moors, heaths and meadows, while birds such as cranes and white-tailed eagles circle above you.
What better way to explore this wonderful landscape than by following in the footsteps of the foresters? The Forester's Trail (Försterweg) is 59 kilometres (37 mi) and crosses Düben Heath between Bergwitz in the north and Doberschütz in the south. Along the way, you’ll learn about traditional forestry, the history of charcoal burning and the formation of the moors. You’ll hike through the ‘pearl of the Düben Heath’, the Pressel heath forest (Presseler Heidewald), and take a short detour to reach the Hohe Gieck, the highest point in the nature park at 193 metres (633 ft). Small villages, cosy inns and many idyllic picnic spots invite you to take a break along the way.
In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into three stages of between 16 and 23 kilometres (10 - 14 mi). For each stage, I provide tips on accommodation and places to stop for refreshments, as well as bus or train connections if you’re planning a day hike. I recommend booking accommodation in advance. The trail is relatively easy. You’ll need hiking boots, waterproof clothing, a few snacks and enough water for each hike.
