Nature meets culture – hikes in the heart of Germany’s Baden-Württemberg

The Esslingen district in the heart of Baden-Württemberg is brimming with contrasts; the landscape is smooth and rough and nature alternates with urban environments. In this Collection, you’ll discover the extraordinary landscape and cultural-historical diversity between Schurwald, Neckar, Fildern and Swabian Alb. Numerous hiking routes showcase the region’s beauty.

In this Collection, I introduce you to three extensive hikes that couldn't be more different. If you’d like to get to know the city of Esslingen from a new perspective, then check out the 28-kilometre (17 mi) Esslinger Höhenweg. This route leads above the Neckar Valley, passing historical highlights, picturesque vineyards and orchards. The views are captivating, even for locals.

The 30-kilometre (18 mi) Achsnagelweg takes you through centuries of history around the Heidengraben. You’ll delve into Celtic and mediaeval times and immerse yourself in magnificent nature and views. The 42-kilometre (26 mi) route through the Schurwald also leads along historical paths, but through completely different landscapes. You’ll explore the Kaisersträßle and walk in the footsteps of Emperor Barbarossa.

The Tours in this Collection are long and varied. If you’re very fit, you can complete the Esslinger Höhenweg and the Achsnagelweg in one day, but bear in mind that the Kaisersträßle is a marathon. You can either view the Tours as a physical challenge or take a more relaxed approach and spread the routes over a few days. You’ll find plenty of accommodation and connections to join/leave the route on both adventures.
