Ariège beckons and Couserans calls – this is a thrilling journey for adventurous mountain bikers. Welcome to the Tour des Portes du Couserans in France.
Nestled on the Pyrenees' edge, bordering the ancient Comminges region, the canton of Portes du Couserans is home to majestic mountains. Valleys reveal breathtaking panoramas, showcasing Mont Vallier, Pic de Cagire, Vignemale, and Pic du Midi de Bigorre. Each bend unveils an impressive summit; every climb rewards extraordinary views.
This demanding loop spans nearly 116 kilometres (72 mi), featuring 2,600 metres (8,500 ft) of elevation gain, so you need to come prepared. The Couserans unfolds its diverse facets along the roads, cart tracks, technical single tracks, and rolling sections, each stage revealing the true essence of the area.
Two days is sufficient to complete the loop, although you can complete it in a single marathon day if you’re feeling brave. Accommodation and catering options dot the route, blending both comfort and tradition. I recommend spending the night in Saint-Lizier, which has plenty of choices. Alternatively, split the first stage and sleep in Prat-Bonrepaux.
If you have more time, explore the trails crisscrossing the Couserans that intersect this route. Regional tourist offices provide valuable information to find out more.
A hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike, appropriate clothing, and supplies are all essential. This adventure is accessible from mid-spring to mid-autumn, depending on weather conditions.
Sainte-Croix-Volvestre is easily reachable by road and serves as both the departure and return point. Alternatively, take the TER train from Toulouse to Cazères-sur-Garonne and return to the starting point by bike (the first Tour guides the way).
Have fun on your mountain bike on this unforgettable adventure.
