Ride far into the forest, take a deep breath, soak up the fresh, fragrant air, pedal on until you can’t go any higher, enjoy the view and follow a river to your destination – that sounds like a perfect bike Tour, right? But, wait! That’s just what a bike Tour in Saarland is like! There’s one small difference – you don’t just venture into the forest once here, but at least twice or more. A whopping 40% of Saarland is covered by Forests. This puts this small federal state at the top of the ‘forest ranking’ in Germany. But, that’s not all...
In addition to the unique nature and landscapes such as the Bliesgau region and the Saarbrücken primeval forest, this area has a rich industrial heritage. The contrast between nature and industrial culture makes it a wonderful place to explore. Some of the former industrial sites have been converted for other, exciting uses whilst nature is quietly reclaiming other sites, creating completely new landscapes – it’s truly fascinating.
In this Collection, we’ve put together seven Tours for you that bring you closer to this contrasting and yet very natural world. You explore the deep forests around Saarbrücken, rutted by water, discover the Bliesgau, which has a touch of Africa about it, and experience industrial romance along the Saar River.
Five of the seven Tours start directly in Saarbrücken's old town at the GIANT Store. If you like, you can make a short pit stop here before you set off and take a look at some new gear. Two other Tours begin a stone’s throw from Saarbrücken. These routes take you to the Osterhöhen hill on the edge of the
They take you to the Osterhöhen at the edge of the North Palatine Uplands and on a detour to the Palatine Forest near Kaiserslautern. You can easily reach the starting points of both Tours in less than an hour by train.
The Saarland is also a culinary paradise. Food plays a vital part in the culture here, especially on a bike Tour! The Saarlanders say that “the main thing is to eat well”. That’s all that we need to say about it. Here, you’ll find plenty of great home-cooked dishes on the table. The only thing you have to worry about is making sure you have enough energy to pedal – ‘the main thing is to cycle well!’
So the only thing you have to worry about is the energy supply. In this sense: "The main thing is to cycle well!
