Krabat was a Sorbian boy who became an apprentice in a mill in Koselbruch, a hamlet near Schwarkollm. This doesn’t sound like a spectacular story yet. However, it turns out that the mill is a school of black magic and the master miller teaches Krabat and 11 other boys the ‘black art’ of sorcery. This is how Krabat’s story begins which has become famous beyond the borders of Germany thanks to Otfried Preußler’s novel. I won’t tell you how the story ends, you have to read the book yourself to find out ;-)

In this Collection, I present the Krabat Cycle Route which follows in the footsteps of the legend. Dreamy villages, lively cities, mysterious lake landscapes and dark forests lie along your road through Lusatia. You visit the places that feature in the novel and experience the Sorbian culture and language that is alive here in Lusatia.

The bike path is under 100 kilometers (62 miles) long, which is why I have divided it into two stages. The first stage leads from the town of Kamenz to Räckelwitz and finishes in Wittichenau, where you can stay overnight. From there, the second stage leads to Schwarzkollm and back to Kamenz. If you want to cycle the stages separately, you can ride a few kilometres extra from Wittichenau to Hoyerswerda which has a train station, as does Kamenz.

The absolute highlight of the Tour is of course the Krabatmühle in Schwarzkollm, where the sage began. There, a small adventure village has been assembled with original, typical Sorbian buildings from the region. The village is dedicated to Krabat and Sorbian culture that accompanies you throughout the Tour. The balanced combination of beautiful nature and exciting culture makes the Krabat Cycle Route perfect for a weekend trip in Lusatia.
