The Gotthard Pass is a legendary mountain pass located in the heart of the Swiss Central Alps. It’s a rugged mountain landscape of gneiss and vertical rock faces, veiled by high fog or visible against the blue sky. Meltwater streams wind their way down into the valley through the soft green foothills and high Alpine vegetation, making this ridge so unmistakable.
Bordered by Lago di Lucendro to the west and Lago della Sella to the east, the pass forms the border between the cantons of Uri and Ticino. It’s not only one of the most important north-south connections but also the weather divide between the harsh Alpine climate in the north and the Mediterranean weather in the south.
The Gottardo Bike Route covers 111 kilometres (69 mi) with an elevation gain of 3,390 metres (11,122 ft). The route takes you from Andermatt over the Gotthard to Biasca in Ticino on mule tracks and over the old pass road. You’ll ride up to the Piora plateau and on into Val Blenio.
On this legendary crossing of the Alps, you’ll not only experience impressive scenic contrasts, challenging trails and the Gotthard Pass but also lesser-known but equally spectacular Alpine passes and picturesque villages. Steep climbs through open larch groves, across lush green plains, past mountain lakes and through dense fir forests lead you on one of the most beautiful tours in the Alps.
In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into three stages. As all start and end points are connected to public transport, you can either cycle the entire route or individual stages. You’ll find accommodation and refreshment stops in the stage destinations of Airolo, Olivone and Biasca. But you’ll also pass the Capanna Cadagno alpine hut halfway along the route, which offers food and accommodation.
The weather in the mountains can change quickly, especially on the Gotthard Pass. On high-altitude sections, snow fields can exist until June. Make sure you pack suitable clothing such as a windbreaker, waterproofs and gloves.
