Amazing views all around — hiking around Tyrol’s Achen Lake

Colección de senderismo de Achensee

Embedded between the peaks of the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, seeming like a fjord, lies Tyrol's biggest lake. More than 500 kilometers of hiking trails lead you into the landscapes around the deep blue Achen Lake. As the whim takes you, you can enjoy the nature on a moderate walk in the flat valley or start a mighty peak ascent. The mountain experience doesn't always have to be paid with your sweat. The Rofan cable car in Maurach and also the Karwendel cable way in Pertisau enable a comfortable way up. From the upper terminus you can reach beautiful huts and shielings within two hours.

The national park Karwendel starts at the Achen Lake western waterfront. It's the biggest combined preservation area in the northern Chalk Alps, which is 920 square-kilometers wide and spreads all the way to Bavaria. Here hikers have the possibilities to enjoy the mountains off the beaten paths with all their sequestered beauty.

This special via ferrata leads over five central peaks of the Rofan. You have the opportunity to commit each of the summits individually or even break off early. Beginners and climbing starters thus do not necessarily have the two-kilometer tour behind them. The total exceedance is reserved for experienced climbers. Depending on fitness and experience, a walking time of six to eight hours is to be expected. All via ferrata are only possible with via ferrata set and helmet! More information on the via ferrata's here: achensee.com/aktivurlaub/sommerurlaub/kletterurlaub/klettersteige/sommerurlaub/kletterurlaub/klettersteige.You can find the topographical map of the five via ferratas at achensee.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/kletterkarte-achensee.pdf.

The route leads along one of the most beautiful trails in Tyrol along the western shore of the Achensee. From Achenkirch you always wander in easy up and down on a partly well-developed with steps and handrails trail to Gaisalm, the only Alm of Tyrol, which can be reached only on foot or by boat. You can expect a magnificent landscape with small waterfalls, mixed forests and alluvial cones that reach into the "Tyrolean fjord". In many places there are bathing possibilities. Along the riverside path you reach Pertisau and later on the way next to the Achensee steam cog railway the village Maurach. At the station Seespitz, which is at the same time the landing stage and the last stop of the Achensee steam cog railway, it is possible to take a ship back to the starting point to Achenkirch. To the timetable: tirol-schiffahrt.atIncidentally, this tour section is part of the long-distance trail "The Alpine Crossing". All information can be found here: die-alpenueberquerung.com

On this beautiful circular walk you start from the valley station of the Rofanseilbahn. You walk past the Naturhotel Alpenblick to the wooden bridge. After the bridge, branch off to the left-hand forest road (signpost) and after about 300 meters, a narrower trail leads off to the right (signpost). On serpentines you reach the Durraalm (not managed). Along the Durrawand over a stony path you reach the farmed Dalfazalm. From the Dalfazalm you hike on the way to Erfurter hut to the lookout bank. From here, turn off to the right (signpost). First over a mountain meadow and then through the forest you reach the ski slope via the Schützensteig. This you follow to the managed Buchauer Alm. From there you have the choice of the forest road or the narrow trail to Maurach descend.

The Bärenkopf offers a great view of the Achensee and the surrounding peaks of the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. A really nice and varied day mountain hike leads up to the summit at 1,991 meters. From Gasthof St. Hubertus (parking about 200 meters away), the slightly ascending path leads past a few of the 18 stations of the Reflection Path to the Rodlhütte-Bärenbadalm junction. Once there, you choose the path direction Bärenbadalm. From the managed Bärenbadalm you follow the path towards Bärenkopf. The path leads always ascending first through the forest in brighter terrain and further up through pines on a spacious plateau. From there the path leads you to the promising summit (1 x cable insurance).Back you take either the same way or at the junction direction Weissenbachalm this path and then keep at the next fork in the direction always Bärenbadalm. There you can stop and take the same way back up to the valley.

For experienced hikers, this tour is easy to commit. From the tollbooth at the entrance of the Karwendeltäler you walk on the toll road in the direction of Pletzachalm to the foot of the Feilkopf, where a small parking lot is on the left. Here, the trail ascends first through Jungwald, then clear to the forest road, where you come right to the managed Feilalm. From the pasture you follow the path to the summit. The way back does not necessarily have to be the same again. The forest road leads back into the valley, past the Pletzachalm (another stopover) and the scenic Seebergsteig back to Pertisau to the starting point.

A great tightrope walk over two peaks with breathtaking views all along the route. From Pertisau back to Achenkirch you take the ship best - a real treat after the long and demanding day hike.
