This ride along the Berlin Wall Trail takes you through romantic forests, extensive fields and picturesque meadows. It takes you past pretty rivers and idyllic lakes—and introduces the infamous history of this epic route in an incredibly unique way. Berlin forms an exciting contrast to the beautiful nature, which makes up about two-thirds of the Wall Trail: historical and modern architecture, straight canals, pretty parks and enchanting cherry tree avenues accompany you along the former Berlin Wall.
Over 100 miles (160 kilometers), the Berlin Wall Trail follows the course of the former GDR border fortifications to West Berlin. The cycle path runs either along the former customs route in West Berlin or along the column path in East Berlin. Most of the Wall Cycle Path is asphalted and pleasant to ride. On some sections, however, you will still find the characteristic concrete slabs of the Column Trail, which was used by the GDR border troops for their control trips. On your way along the Wall Trail, you will not only find many historically interesting sections, where you can still see some of the remains of the Wall but also beautiful landscapes and unspoiled nature outside the gates of the city. The history of the division of Germany and the Berlin Wall is explained at countless memorials for the victims of the Wall and on information boards.
You can ride the circuit around the former West Berlin in three stages, each about 30 miles (50 kilometers) long. If you prefer to cycle only one stage or a section of it, it is also possible, because all stages can be reached by public transport and you will always pass railway stations on the way. Therefore, you can easily integrate the ride into your trip to Berlin without having to change your accommodation every day. And if you live in Berlin, you don't need to take a lot of luggage on your bike—you'll plenty of places to stock up on supplies.
