Between the Kocher and the Neckar, a small stream meanders through a fertile valley – the Rems. It rises between Lauterburg and Essingen, very close to Aalen. On its banks, you will find pretty small towns which have preserved their medieval charm in their well-kept half-timbered buildings. On your way through the Remstal, you will find exciting contrasts such as historical half-timbered buildings standing next to futuristic buildings like the "Forum Gold and Silver" in Schwäbisch Gmünd. During the garden show in 2019, large parts of the river are renatured and the cycle path here is well developed. In addition, the route is relatively flat so the 68 miles (109 kilometer) long Remstal bike path is also ideal for families. Great playgrounds, dredging lakes, rest areas and the chance to splash around in the Rems make sure that little and big kids do not get bored. In addition, there will be interesting events in many villages until October 2019 during the garden show.
We have divided the Remstal Cycle Path into four short stages. If you are a bit more athletic, you can master it in two days. On the way, you often have the opportunity to get on the train, as there is a railway line in Remstal. The extremely beautiful bike path, classified by the ADFC as a 4 star quality route, does not start at the source, as you might expect, but in the Lower Remstal in Endersbach. From there, you ride through vineyards and enjoy a magnificent view of the landscape in the Remstal. Next you will continue along the Neckar which you will follow to the Rems estuary. Here, you cycle along the river as it winds its way through the rocks in many loops. On your way, you will follow the Rems upriver and cross beautiful, idyllic landscapes and pretty little towns: Waiblingen, Schorndorf, and Schwäbisch Gmünd.
In Essingen, you leave the run of the Rems. If you take a small detour, you can also ride to the Remsquelle. In Essingen, you reach the summit of the Remstal Cycle Path at a height of just over 500 meters (1600 feet). From there, the path leads you slightly downhill to Kocher and Aalen. At the end of your adventure, this old medieval town will welcome you once again with an extra dose of half-timbered charm. Both the end point in Aalen and the starting point in Endersbach can be easily reached by train. By the way, you can rent a bike or e-bike at several stations along the way.
