Nestled between the Alps and the Vosges, the Jura lies along the border between France and Switzerland. This crescent-shaped massif extends over 360 kilometres (220 mi) with the Crêt de la Neige as its highest point, at an altitude of 1,720 metres (5,640 ft). These mountains are full of diverse natural treasures and this richness is also evident in the cuisine. Sausages, cheeses and wines will keep you well fuelled on your journey.
On the French side, you’ll explore the Jura vineyard and the Bugey vineyard. The first extends over a geological fracture located between the Bresse plain and the foothills of the Jura massif. Historically made up of small owners, it covers an area of approximately 1,850 hectares (4,600 acres), making it one of the smallest in France. However, the territory is diverse and it has several grape varieties, producing seven AOC (agricultural identification label) Wines of Jura: Crémant du Jura, Macvin, Côtes du Jura, Château-Chalon, l’Etoile, Arbois, and Marc du Jura. Smaller still with an area of 500 hectares (1,200 acres), the Bugey vineyard also offers an impressive range of grape varieties, supported by its two AOC Bugey and Roussette du Bugey. All these wines are renowned for their character and richness, like the Jura Mountains.
The routes in this Collection immerse you in this impressive wine heritage. Accessible for most cyclists, they start near a train station or a car park. All routes are suitable for a wide range of bikes (hybrid, electric, gravel, mountain bike, etc.).
The vineyards of the Jura Mountains and the massifs are spectacular throughout the year. However, March to October are the most suitable months for cycling. Summer offers long and sunny days, spring boasts mild temperatures and the colours come alive in autumn.
All you have to do is decide on your favourite route and enjoy cycling through the vineyards.
