It’s claimed that the true boundaries of the Earth are the mountain summits, natural fortifications extending from our planet’s crust to the stratosphere. Indeed, the summit of the Chimborazo volcano in Ecuador is the Earth's closest point to the Sun, at 6,263 metres (20,547 ft) above sea level. This Collection guides you along the Trans Ecuador Mountain Bike Route (TEMBR) through this small country on the equator, adorned with a chain of towering volcanoes and imposing mountains.
We completed this route as part of our around-the-world bicycle journey in 2019 and thought it was one of the most breathtaking stretches we pedalled. It was late October and protests were raging against the government's decision to remove a subsidy, which would potentially increase prices for fuel, transport and other products. We had to change our route because of road closures. Unfavourable weather also meant we had to deviate away from our itinerary, but it was remarkable nonetheless.
The Trans Ecuador Mountain Bike Route, designed by Cass Gilbert from the Bikepacking.com team, is an extensive off-road route spanning Ecuador from north to south, along the volcanic and mountainous Andean ridge. Stretching from Tulcán on the Colombian border to Vilcabamba, bordering Peru, the TEMBR route ventures through unique ecosystems like the páramo high-altitude neotropics, alongside Ecuador's towering volcanoes, into remote villages, down dizzying gorges, and along the shores of enchanting lakes. The terrain consists mainly of dirt roads, at times well-trodden, and at others, covered in pebbles or stones, categorising it as a mountain bike (MTB) trail. We rode it on a bicycle equipped with a hardtail (Cinelli Hobootleg Geo), 27.5-inch wheels and 2.8-inch tubeless tires, allowing us to adjust pressure for smoother pedalling and a better grip on the technical sections.
You need to be fit for this itinerary. As well as varying terrains, there are abrupt changes in altitude; you’ll transition from tropical valleys to Andean elevations exceeding 4,000 metres (13,000 ft). Adequate acclimatisation time is crucial, as is approaching the climbs steadily and without haste.
The optimal time for TEMBR is the ‘dry season,’ typically from mid-June to mid-September. However, even during this period, unexpected heavy rainfall and sub-zero temperatures in higher regions are possible. Make sure you pack appropriate waterproof gear and warm clothing in your bags.
Despite passing through remote areas, numerous small rural villages offer affordable dining and lodging options. While you could consider leaving your tent and stove behind, it’s probably wise to prepare for a few days of self-sufficiency, as you may have to change your plans because of the weather. You’ll find lots of water, but carry a filter.
We undertook the route independently and found it easy to find camping spots. At times, we benefitted from the hospitality of Salesian centres and ‘casa de bicistas’ – cycling enthusiasts generously offering their homes or gardens.
Each stage of this Collection spans several days, commencing and concluding in an urban centre where you can rest and refresh. To reach the starting point, Tulcán, several local buses operate from the capital, Quito, with the Expreso Tulcán company, departing from the Quitumbe land terminal. You can finish your adventure in Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city with national and international airport facilities, or continue to Vilcabamba and return to Quito by bus.
Before embarking on this journey, a few more tips: While the landscapes and nature are undoubtedly alluring, remember that a country is made up of its people and culture – nurture your curiosity and respect your encounters. Some knowledge of Spanish can go a long way. The areas covered by this itinerary are generally safe. In the Andean villages, your cycling presence may spark curiosity, but exercise caution, especially in urban areas, and don’t put your belongings on display.
