Hungry for a few more rays of sunshine, we set off to the Canary Islands for a "summer extension". I've been drawn to this destination for a long time, also inspired by the Gran Guanche ultracycling event. However, I think it would be a shame to cycle some of the islands completely at night. So together with Marion, we set off in mid-December to ride the islands in bikepacking mode. We customized the route a bit according to our wishes by adding details or taking out sections. Routes :
Each route corresponds to the distance we have traveled per day.
We ended our trip in Candelaria to have a bit of time to spare before our departure. From there, we made a day trip to the Anaga mountains, which is very worthwhile and can also be easily integrated into the route. (For us, however, the daily stages didn't work out with the accommodation.)
Ferries:
Information about the ferries can be found here: ferryhopper.com/de
Some ferries run hourly (e.g. Lanzarote-Fuerteventura), others only a few times a day (Fuerteventura-Gran Canaria). It is therefore worth having a rough idea of the ferry schedules. In total we have paid for all ferries 147 euros per person. We later found out that you get a discount if you book the day before instead of directly at the counter. However, we booked directly at the counter as we were never quite sure whether we would catch the ferry on the day before.
In principle, everything went smoothly with the ferries. You should be there about 20 minutes before departure. The bikes are secured in the vehicle compartment and you can then stay on top of the ferry. There is also food and the possibility to load electric devices. Some ferries provide even showers in service.
Difficulty:
We rode the route by mountain bike. The route is very varied and mostly rideable. There are a few stretches on the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as on the long climb in Gran Canaria. However, these are very rewarding in terms of the views. There are also rolling sections and asphalt sections, but I would still advise against taking a gravel bike.
Camping:
In terms of overnight stays, we camped on the one hand, but sometimes we also slept indoors. Wild camping is not allowed everywhere on the Canary Islands. However, we often arrived in the dark and left straight away in the morning and had no problems. There are numerous quiet places on the route that would be suitable for setting up a tent. We spontaneously booked an Airbnb for the second night in Fuerteventura. On Tenerife we stayed in the great rustic mountain hostel Los Partidos, which I can definitely recommend!

Airbnb in Costa Calma (everything went smoothly here) airbnb.de/rooms/21913077?check_in=2024-03-22&check_out=2024-03-27&guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=682c15fb-0941-47a0-9307-3fe712979567Resupply:
The option to resupply varies greatly. There are few options, especially in the national parks.
Logistics:
We traveled by plane and had our bikes in a disposable bike box. After arriving in Tenerife, we organized boxes at a bike store. I had enquired in advance whether any were available. However, taking bikes on the bus turned out to be difficult. In retrospect, I would recommend accommodation close to the airport.
