This Collection is dedicated to those who wish to explore the varied Italian province of Brescia, between Valle Sabbia and Val Trompia, the latter being my native valley. This loop totals 169 kilometres (105 mi) with 3,139 metres (10,300 ft) of elevation gain and affords the opportunity to appreciate the ever-changing Italian foothills of the Alps.
The starting and finishing point is the city of Brescia, at the foot of the Brescian Pre-Alps. I’ve divided the route into two stages in an attempt to immerse you fully in this portion of the territory, certain that it will remain etched in your memory.
From Brescia, you’ll head eastwards, leaving the city centre behind you, to follow the cycle/pedestrian path leading to the mouth of Valle Sabbia and the picturesque Lake Idro. At this stage, the route alternates between smooth dirt roads and secondary roads shared with local traffic. The first stage ends in Bagolino, famous for its carnival masks.
In the second stage, the environment turns mountainous, with imposing peaks such as the Cornone di Blumone watching over you. The route proposes an ascent through Valle Sabbia, following wonderful panoramic roads at high altitude, and a descent through Val Trompia. I’ve tried to maximise the use of cycle paths, often intersected by traditional roads.
You can tackle this route with any bicycle, except for a traditional racing bike. There are no technical or dangerous trails, but I recommend a gravel bike with tyres of at least 30 millimetres to safely and nimbly tackle gradients of up to 20 percent and the more unpaved sections. The ground is always smooth. Bring a repair kit and two water bottles for the sections without public fountains.
The ideal time to ride this route is from late spring to autumn, avoiding the cold months when snow is present above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). Brescia is easily accessible by train or by car via the motorway. Book your accommodation in advance and make sure you enjoy your trip to the fullest.
