The Apple Cycle Path (Apfel-Radl-Weg) runs through a varied landscape in the Lower Bavarian border region of Germany between the Danube and Inn rivers. It’s mainly apple and pear trees that grow here, which characterise the scenery as well as the cuisine. The fruit is used to make desserts and drinks such as cider and brandies, which have a long tradition in this region. The name of this 102-kilometre (64 mi) loop refers to the apple and the bike and, of course, the Apfelradl, a delicious baked pastry made from fresh, tart apple slices, coated in crispy pancake batter. You have to try it!
In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into two stages due to the many highlights along the way. However, ambitious cyclists can also complete the route in one day. Starting in Passau (or another town on the route), you’ll initially be travelling along the mighty Danube. After passing through Vilshofen, the first stage becomes a little hillier. Riding through gnarled fruit trees, you’ll reach Ortenburg, where you’ll spend the night. From the hilly cultural landscape near Fürstenzell, you’ll cycle down into the valley of the winding Sulzbach stream to Neuhaus. You’ll return to Passau on the wonderful Inn Cycle Path directly on the border with Austria, with possible detours into the neighbouring country, for example to my hometown of Schärding.
You can spend the night in Ortenburg, your stage town, at the Hotel Zum Koch or in one of the few private accommodations. You can easily reach the start or finish point at Passau railway station by train, bus or car from anywhere in Germany and Austria. The Apple Cycle Path runs along gravel cycle paths or side roads, making it perfect for a gravel bike. Two seasons are particularly recommended for this cycle tour: spring, when the trees in the orchards transform with white blossom, and autumn, when the delicious fruit is ripe. The Apple Cycle Path is a magnificent weekend adventure for anyone who likes to take it easy.
