The Möhnesee is a reservoir on the Möhne. At a traffic jam destination it has 10.37 km² of water surface and a storage space of 134.50 million m³ of water, which is dammed up by a 40.3 m high and 650 m long dam.
The Möhnetalsperre was severely damaged in the Second World War by a British bombing from 16 to 17 May 1943. In the dam, this created a small crack, which was quickly expanded by the pressure of the escaping masses of water and finally a huge trapezoidal gap resulted (77 m wide by 22 m depth), through which the mass of water flowed out. Due to the resulting tidal wave, which spilled over the Möhne far into the Ruhr Valley, according to various sources, at least 1284 or even more than 1600 people were killed. (Source: Wikipedia)
