The Schulenberg tunnel in Hattingen is an old railway tunnel that connected Hattingen to Wuppertal via the coal railway. Today the coal railway cycle route runs there and the tunnel eliminates the strenuous bypass that you had to undertake until a few years ago.

The school mountain tunnel is a 195 m long former railway tunnel in Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was built in 1883 and in 1884 the railway line through it, the so-called coal railway, was opened from Wuppertal to Hattingen. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1979, and freight traffic in 1984.

On September 23, 2008, it was released for cycling again after the completion of the railway line's renovation in 1989. The concept is closed at night, but the position of "key officer" is currently vacant, so that it remains open indefinitely even at night.

The tunnel is part of the Von-Ruhr-to-Ruhr cycle path that was created in 2008.

If you come from the north (Ruhr / Hattingen) this is the first of many other tunnels, if you drive to the northern railway line to Wuppertal.

When I drove through the tunnel, I suddenly had headwind, unlike on the track before it. Apparently, the wind conditions for this passage have ensured by pressure equalization ...

If you drive from the Ruhr (Hattingen) direction Sprockhövel, this is the first tunnel to pass through. If you like tunnels, you should continue in the direction of Wuppertal (Nordbahntrasse), there are many more.

The tunnel was built in 1883 and in 1884 the Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen – Hattingen railway line, the so-called coal railway from Wuppertal to Hattingen, was opened. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1979, and freight traffic in 1984.

On September 23, 2008, it was released for cycling again after the completion of the railway line's renovation in 1989. At night, it was supposed to remain closed according to the original concept, but the key officer position was not filled.

As an important transport connection, the tunnel is open all year round and can also be used at night. Exceptions to this were previously only due to art actions or icicles forming in the tunnel (Easter 2013).

The tunnel is part of the Von-Ruhr-to-Ruhr cycle path, which was created in 2008, and the football route NRW.

The south-east entrance is on Bredenscheider Straße along the Sprockhöveler Bach. The northwestern end is east of Grünstraße in Hattingen.

Although this tunnel and many others are illuminated, you should have light as a cyclist and as a jogger, if you drive through.

Tunnel on today's bike path and former railway line between Hattingen and Wuppertal.
Very nice bike path, unfortunately 35 years late for me as a way to school.
