In the historic center of Rheinberg, a mighty complex of buildings stands out. It is the headquarters of the well-known herb bitter company Underberg, which has meanwhile largely relocated production to Berlin. In the prestigious Underberg villa today is u.a. housed the company archive.
After the company founder Hubert Underberg had acquired some buildings at Rheinstraße, Holzmarkt and Marktstraße, he had his residential and commercial building built in their place in the middle of the 19th century. The design in the style of an Italian-French influenced late Renaissance was provided by the Düsseldorf Academy Professor Ernst Giese. Of the interiors, the vestibule with a staircase equipped with classical stucco work and the hall with rococo stucco on the first floor are to be mentioned. The construction still serves as a business representation for the family business Underberg.

At this point is the pump of the oldest documented Rheinberger pump neighborhood "Am Fischmarkt". Immediately to the pump border the hotel "Am Fischmarkt", the parent company of the bitter-bitter-family Underberg, the Underberg Palais, as well as the gothic style built old town hall Rheinberg from 1449 on. The Old Town Hall is now managed by a sponsoring association. In it is u.a. to see a permanent Underberg exhibition. There are also changing exhibitions and cultural events.

Underberg Palais and the adjacent manufacturing facilities are of particular importance to Rheinberg. Architecturally, the complex in the city center is certainly not uninteresting. In addition, the area with historic town hall (1449), market, etc. is well worth a visit!

On June 17, 1846, on the day of his wedding to Catharina Albrecht, Hubert Underberg founded the company “H. Underberg-Albrecht ”in Rheinberg. Following the example of the Dutch "Boonekamp", a kind of bitter, Hubert Underberg created his own recipe for a digestif with herbs from a total of 43 countries, which was initially referred to as the "Boonekamp of Maagbitter".
