The French Cathedral is a monument on the Gendarmenmarkt in the Mitte district of Berlin. Built in the Baroque style by Frederick II in the years 1780–1785 by Carl von Gontard, it borders the French Church to the east and lies opposite the German Cathedral. Burned out during the Second World War, the French Cathedral was rebuilt from 1978 to 1983 according to the original and modernly rebuilt on the inside. Between 1780 and 1785, King Frederick II had two almost identical but non-functional towers built according to plans by Carl von Gontard to the German and French churches.
