The construction of the Roman aqueduct was truly a masterpiece 👍

Reconstruction of the aqueduct bridge Vussem. It was part of the Roman Eifel aqueduct to Cologne and spanned a now nameless side valley of Veybach.

A steep staircase leads to the top of the former Roman aqueduct.

At Vussem, the Veytal is over 70 m wide, has steep slopes and is split into two gorges.

The Romans bridged this incision when building the water pipe to Cologne through arched arches. A total of ten to twelve self-supporting pillars used to stand here.

The foundations of two pillars were verified by excavations and examined in 1958. Three pillars with the associated line section were reconstructed in 1959. (Source:

I would say the highlight on the Roman Canal hiking trail. But had imagined it larger.

If you have not seen an aquaduct before, why not take a detour?

When you stand in front of it, you cannot believe that it is so old.

The water pipe to Cologne was designed as a pure downpipe. This made the construction very complex since the line was only allowed to lose a minimal amount of height on its way to Cologne.

Beautiful aqueduct, which was part of the Roman aqueduct - to supply Cologne with Eifler drinking water.

Actually an impressive example of Roman engineering, but unfortunately no longer Roman except for a few remains of the foundation.
A small part of the original entire bridge was elaborately reconstructed, but in our opinion it was designed very carelessly.
Located between the cemetery and the sports field with a toilet, no invitation for hikers to linger.

Located right next to a parking lot and sports field. Certainly very crowded at later times of the day and when the weather is nice. A path leads up to the top of the aqueduct

Impressive that they built it. And that it has survived to this day. My respect!
