The tunnel was originally intended to discharge the waters of the Märjelensee into the valley. Originally, the waterline was on the lake side at the mouth of the tunnel and the glacier had dammed the lake so far. In the spring during the snowmelt, this stagnation then became leaky and the Mäjelensee, which erupted through the glacier, caused great damage below the glacier. The tunnel was designed to remove some of the water in time to limit the damage. Today, no more water is marveled at by the glacier melt and the tunnel serves as a footpath.

It's like a little mine. You should wear waterproof shoes and a jacket! The path is flat but in places there is water over the whole width. There is a statue of Madonna in the tunnel. Stalactites on the ceiling are also interesting. The tunner is illuminated, but a flashlight won't do any harm.
