The entire Ilmenau is due to their great importance for the flora and fauna designated as FFH area and over large parts as a nature reserve. Among the Elbe tributaries it is considered the most important representative of the river type "Heidebach". As a gravel-flowing stream of the lowlands, there are many structures in the Ilmenau that provide a habitat for many animals and plants. These include lush fish fauna with endangered species such as grayling, minnow, bitterling and bullhead, as well as salmon and sea trout migratory fish. In addition, 68 single-day, stone and caddis flies were detected, of which 25 alone are on the "Red List". Other protected species are the Green Maiden, the Otter and the Brook or Small River Mussel.

The approximately 389 ha area "Lüneburg Ilmenauniederung with zoo" is located between Grünhagen in the district of Uelzen and the city center of Lüneburg in the district of Lüneburg. It includes the Ilmenau, their lowlands with the estuaries of the tributary streams, the forests adjacent to the Geestrand and the forests around the tributaries Ordau, Göxer Bach and Lausebach in the Lüneburg Tiergarten. The area is of particular importance for nature conservation as part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area "Ilmenau mit Nebenbächen".

The flooded, largely open Ilmenaun lowland is characterized by the meandering river and a mosaic of differently used grassland. In part, the areas have been taken out of use, sporadically there is field. The mixed beech and oak mixed forests on the Geestrand are just as important as the wet forests in the area of the Lüneburg Tiergarten.

Protective purpose is in particular the conservation and development of semi-natural, continuous rivers, natural deciduous forests, various low-growing habitats and species-rich grasslands with their characteristic, z.T. endangered plant and animal species (such as otters, bullheads and brook mussels) and communities.

This highlight is located south of Wilsche break and is popular with walkers with and without dogs, joggers, canoeists and cyclists. It is in a delicate balance between free time recreation and nature conservation. The rules should be respected.
