The GDR planned in the early 50s in Berlin to build a new facility, which should serve mainly to send the GDR television. At first one took a location in the Müggelbergen in the eye. After outbuildings had already been built there, the Ministry of the Interior determined that the transmitter would be in the approach lane of the planned Schönefeld airport.

In the sixties, the GDR leadership had the television tower built at its well-known location, not least in order to demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the socialist social system.
Today, the tower shapes the silhouette of the German capital - like the Brandenburg Gate a landmark of the reunified Germany.

The Berlin TV Tower is THE symbol of Berlin and with its 368 m height also the highest publicly accessible building in Germany. The breathtaking observation deck at a height of 203 m provides a free and spectacular view over Berlin in all directions - behind a glass paneling as well as an immediate outdoor experience - on fine days even up to 40 km.

If you look closely, you can see a cross-shaped reflection of the sun on the ball, which is popularly called - alluding to the costly attempts of the atheist GDR to suppress this blasphemy - the "revenge of the pope".

In addition to the observation deck, you can enjoy the breathtaking view over Berlin in the Panoramabar or in the revolving Sphere - which turns in an hour once on its own axis - with drinks and food.

The Alexanderplatz in Mitte is probably one of the most famous places in Berlin. And certainly the biggest. Named after Tsar Alexander I, who visited the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1805, he is usually called "Alex" by the Berliners.

The TV tower is very present around Alexanderplatz. Especially nice is the anecdote from the time before the turn. The regime of the GDR had problems with the fact that the glass panes of the ball of the tower reflect a cross in the sun.
