In the middle between the Rømø dam and the beach is the Tvismark plantation, approx. 1.5 km² with pine forest, heath and dunes. In the Tvismark plantation there are approx. 15 of the 50 bunkers that remained on Rømø from the time of the German occupation from 1940-45. The Germans had one of the largest radar positions around the so-called “mammoth bunker”. Blowing up the bunkers after the war was an unmanageable task. Instead, they were buried more or less under sand. Most of the bunkers are locked, but you can join a guided bunker tour that takes you into some of the bunkers and even out through an emergency exit. Tours can be reserved at Tønnisgård Nature Center.
