Archaeological finds indicate a wooden building from the pre-millennium period, probably a moth. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1180, when the archbishop of Cologne acquired the feudal rights from a man from Rheydt. The castle was probably intended for the military protection of the Gladbach Abbey.
The current appearance of the three-part system (Torburg, Vorburg, Haupthaus) is largely due to construction work from 1558 to 1570. Similar to the Jülich Citadel, a rampart with a gate castle, bastion and casemates was surrounded by an outer moat fed by the Niers. A second inner moat follows on the inside, surrounding the outer bailey and the main house. This mansion was designed as a representative residential building in the style of the Italian Renaissance with Dutch influences. Destruction and renovations have been limited since then, so that the system is well preserved.
This manor house was converted into a museum in 1930, then in 1940 by Josef Göbbels as a guest house, and after the Second World War was converted back into a museum, which it still is today.
