A former monastery with a moving history. Many parts are used for business today. The basilica houses an organ performing a piece by John Cage.

In Halberstadt in the northern Harz foreland, a worldwide unique organ concert is taking place. It is a piece of music called Organ² / ASLSP by American composer John Cage. As a subtitle and simultaneous tempo dictation, the composer stated "as slow as possible" (as slowly as possible).
This provision can be interpreted - if one so wished - also very liberally: In the Halberstäder church St. Burchardi the work mentioned is now performed in a way to which no music piece has ever been heard.
You have already missed the beginning of the concert when reading these lines, because this was September 5 of the year 2001. But there is no reason to hurry: The performance ends on September 4, 2640. The playing time of this musical is to be 639 years Work on a specially constructed organ!
The piece started with a one and a half year break. The first chord was first heard on February 5, 2003. This sound was heard for several months.
The musical instrument - the organ - will be completed in the course of the performance. Only a few organ pipes are installed. Over the next few centuries, however, more and more will come with every new sound.
So, if you want to feel a sense of eternity, you should visit the St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt to witness a tiny fraction of the longest concert in human history. The church is open in the summer months (April to October) every day except Mondays from 11am to 5pm and during the winter months (November to March) also every day except Mondays from 12pm to 4pm.

On the railing of the St. Burchardi monastery we find the church founded around 1186 by Bishop Burchard I of Halberstadt. Today only the center on the Holtemme remains.
One of the most innovative art projects in Saxony-Anhalt has been running in the Romanesque, towerless basilica since 2001: The international performance of ORGAN / ASLSP, an organ composition by American avant-garde artist John Cage (1912 - 1992) over a period of 639 years. In this version it is the longest piece of music in the world.
