The Jewish community looks back on almost 800 years of history in the former episcopal city. In its heyday in the 18th century, it made up almost 10 percent of the population. Thanks to its best known member Berend Lehmann (1661-1730), court president of Augustus the Strong of Saxony, the community was one of the most important in Central Europe at the time.
Few remains of the once imposing baroque synagogue are hidden behind the Hebrew characters of the Hirsch café and restaurant.
