I took a look at Bourtange and attended a lecture on the fortress. Very interesting what was going on there before. Ultimately, Bourtange then lost importance due to changes in trade routes. Today the fortress is used for living and is therefore a living monument. The Dutch are very pragmatic in some ways and have saved the fortress from decay.

Definitely watch and linger. The Dutch national dish tastes great here too: Appelgebak met slagroom.

The "Vesting" Bourtange must be seen. In good weather you can spend the whole day here and maybe even overnight.

On the access road to the reconstructed fortress (Willem Lodewijkstraat) are two guardians of Adrienne Morriën, for the Marthe Röling model stood. On the wall of the Willem Lodewijck School is a relief by Klaas van Dijk (1913-1990), Dutch sculptor and painter, member of the art circle De Ploeg.

Bourtange is an inhabited former fortress in the Netherlands. It is located in the Dutch province of Groningen, two kilometers from the German-Dutch border near Dörpen.

Within the fortress pentagon lies the current museum village Bourtange as a tourist attraction.

The fortress town is surrounded by ramparts and moats, protected by bridge keeper's houses and houses typical contemporary houses, such as the "Capiteynslogement", the house of the Proviantmeister ("Convooimeester") and other officers' houses, spice houses, the church, various mills, the defenses including cannons and Gunpowder store and the "Secreten" (former toilet facility).

Also in Bourtange is the restored synagogue dating back to 1842, which until the Second World War served as a prayer house for the Jews living in the area. During the war, all Jewish inhabitants of Bourtange were deported; only two of them returned. The prayer house is set up as a synagogue museum and is the only well-preserved synagogue along the Dutch-German border.

In addition to an information center, various museums, restaurants and cafes, a hotel is also housed in the fortress.

Always worth seeing. A bike tour is worthwhile despite Corona.
In any case, gastronomy is given.
