From the free on a hilltop Gotthards ruin you have a magnificent view of Amorbach on one side and on Weilbach, if you look in the other direction. If you continue on Weilbach, you will recognize the foothills of the Spessart near Miltenberg. Opposite are the hills and mountains of the Odenwald. But you have to work out this great all-round view ...;)

The Gotthard ruin, a gothic pillar basilica, stands on a hilltop of the nearby Gotthardsberg. From here you have a magnificent view of seven valleys and the surrounding mountains. The "Gotthard", once Frankenberg, has a turbulent history. He was at times Raubritterburg and later nunnery.

For the protection and administration of the Monastery of Amorbach, the bishop of Würzburg appointed bailiffs who had a castle on the Frankenberg above Weilbach. 1138 was in honor of St. Godehard von Hildesheim inaugurated a castle chapel. 1168 Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa confirmed at the Diet in Würzburg the ducal rights of the Bishop of Würzburg and decided the destruction of the castle Frankenberg, as it posed a threat. He further ordered that this hilltop never be re-attached. Only the hl. Godehard consecrated chapel was preserved. She was transferred to the Abbey of Amorbach, who built a nunnery there and henceforth called the mountain Gotthard.
New Vogt of the monastery of Amorbach was Ruprecht von Dürn, a close follower of the Staufen Emperor. When his grandson, Konrad von Dürn, founded the Cistercian convent of Seligenthal in 1236 and relocated the nuns from the Gotthardsberg there in 1244 to rebuild a fortified site, he came into conflict with the emperor and pope and had to return the Benedictines to the Gotthardsberg to let. In the 15th century, the monastery lost more and more importance and was finally dissolved in 1439. In 956, the ruins were restored and a roof was added to protect the building from further deterioration.

In the ruins you can over a narrow spiral staircase on a platform to the roof of the ruin, fantastic all-round light. Only for dizziness😎

Wonderful vantage point with a crisp uphill and a hairy zigzag downhill, but you can also drive on gravel path.

Nice view from the tower of the ruin; In the entrance area to the tower, generations of visitors have immortalized themselves by name in the sandstone.
