The Springorum cycle path runs over parts of a former mining railway line that ran from Essen to Bochum-Langendreer. On about ten kilometers you cycle here on the tracks of the Ruhrpott story and you can mostly look forward to a quiet, beautiful and paved route between Bochum Dahlhausen and Bochum Weitmar. Only in the first section of Dahlhausen are you out on loose ground.

The track climbs steadily in the direction of Bochum, so you make a total of about 90 meters in altitude. From the train station in Dahlhausen there is a connecting bike path that leads directly to the Ruhr Valley cycle path, so you can great, low-traffic tours directly into the center of Bochum (or out) drive. The end of the track in Bochum is close to the main station - from here you are very fast, for example, on the Erzbahntrasse.

Incidentally, the railway line was once popularly known as the "Springorum Bahn", because at the edge of the track was the same hard coal power plant. Today, a business park is located on the former power plant site. The bike path reminds of the history of the region.

The English coal route, old railway line as a cycle path
The Rauendahler Schiebeweg at Hattingen south of Bochum, was built in 1787 in the Ruhr region as the first of a series of horse-powered coal roads after then British model (English way), for the transport of mined coal for reloading on the Ruhr. The name was taken over by the sliding carriages. As usual at that time, the rails were made of wooden planks, from 1794 they were nailed to reduce wear with cast iron plates. The Rauendahler Schiebeweg becomes the first railroad in the German-speaking world due to the construction of the railway, which is operated with iron-studded rails. Its length was about 1,600 meters.

The last section from Schlosspark Weitmar to Dahlhausen was opened on 07.06.2019 and leads with a slight gradient to the roundabout of Dr.C.-Otto-Straße to Dahlhausen.
The former dirt road became a top paved bike path with plenty of seating for a break and LED light poles for use in the dark season.
    Everything was perfect!

The Springorum cycle path is an old railway line that led from the Bochum Nord station to (abandoned) Weitmar station. The power plant Springorum was supplied with coal via the route.
The bike path is well developed with little slope and almost crossing-free to traffic, in the northern section to the Königsallee even illuminated. From Schlosspark Weitmar there is a connection to cycle path 50, which leads to the Ruhr.

I included the Springorum bike path in my tour. From the archbase route from Westpark continue on the new bike path Parband West (no signs yet) but the bike path is finished and continues via Bochum Eppendorf to Haus Weitmar from there via the Springorum route to Altenbochum.

Today "Springorum Bike Path". Comfortable gently rising connection from the Ruhr to the city of Bochum. Also the older section of the Ruhr meanwhile asphalted.

Great flow while driving, wide enough, very good for the drive to the center. Of that you would need much more in the Ruhr area!

The tunnel closes the former gap of the Springorum route, which forced an unfortunate detour.

Very nice railway track in the green. Lots of trees, good track and at the end you can see something of the history - so the last track section. In addition, the route leads to the Ruhr and can therefore be combined well with each other

The section of the route is relatively fresh and connects the later coming coal railway with the Springorum cycle path. a meaningful connection, you can get from the city over great sights via train tracks to the Ruhr.

The best deed in 2018 when the tunnel was opened and no need to drive over the large intersection of the Hattinger and waterways.
