The Zoll und Powder Tower, as it is called today, dates from 1298, and originally belonged to the city fortifications of Rheinberg as a defense tower.
Since this tower, at a height of approx. 20 meters and a diameter of 17 meters, was built as a visible, defensive symbol, and at that time stood directly on the Rhine, it was used as a customs tower for the ships on the Rhine.
It was later used as an ammunition store and powder tower.
In 1598, Rheinberg was besieged by the Spaniards. The powder tower exploded and was later repaired.
In 1636 this powder tower exploded again, this time a lightning strike was to blame for the explosion.
