The Grugatrasse, a former railway line, extends from Mülheim-Heißen to Essen-Steele Süd station. The route is about halfway slightly uphill, but also presents no major problems for the inexperienced cyclist. On the way you can visit the Grugapark, which is located directly on the bike path. Bicycle parking spaces are available at the entrance.

Connections: In Mülheim you get over a short stretch of road connection to the bike path Rheinische Bahn direction Essen-Zentrum. The part towards Duisburg is still under construction / in planning. At kilometer eight of Grugatrasse there is a turnoff towards Baldeneysee. At the end, in Essen-Steele, Grugatrasse merges into the cycle path Veltenbahn. This short piece ends in Essen-Freisenbruch.

the description is true except for the last two sentences. In the amount of the finca ends the Grugatrasse and turns into the Ruhrtalradweg. At the height of the Ruhrstop you should use the left side and follow the left path behind the bridge. After a few meters signposted zigzag you are then in front of the S-Bahn station Essen-Steele Ost. There begins the former Veltenbahn, which is called since short mountain route. If you follow the signs you get to the Kray-Wanner-route or Zollvereintrasse. From there you can cycle either direction Zollverein or Erzbahn

Very nice bike path but not necessarily suitable for road cyclists with road tires due to the gravel road

The Gruga cycle path offers the opportunity to cross Essen from East to West or from Frohnhausen to Steele comfortably and at a pace that is often not possible by car.

When the lights are on in the Grugapark again in March, you should drive there

The bike path is easy to drive. Even in summer it is always cool and shady thanks to the many trees.

The cycle path is lightly gravel with a firm and loamy surface. I've already ridden the route on my racing bike, the gravel is nowhere near so coarse that you should definitely avoid the path. When it is dry, the path is very dusty and since it leads through the middle of the city, it is also rather crowded on weekends.

A nice bike connection on a former railway line between the RS 1 and the Ruhr valley. Leads close to the Margarethenhöhe Essen and the GRUGA Park.

Attention, in bad weather it can get uncomfortable here and there without mudguards. In dry weather conditions, however, it can also be used for sporty cycling

At the moment two sections are closed due to construction work and must be bypassed using signposted detours.
Otherwise I can only emphasize how dusty the gravelly section from around Gruga Park down towards RS1 is often in summer. Strade Bianche for weekend pros, so to speak. After that, my lungs always sound like coal buddy. When the weather is damp, it's a pure mud fight. As already indicated elsewhere here, mudguards are sometimes highly recommended on this cycle path, even days after rainy weather.
It is also worth emphasizing the fact that the Grugaweg is sometimes overcrowded with walkers and joggers. It is not uncommon for two people to walk side by side, even when there is a lot of activity. So be careful!

For me it is the feeder to the RS1. Unfortunately, a very dusty gravel road. So cleaning your bike beforehand is a very bad idea ...
In the other direction, it is at least asphalted from Rüttenscheid and is constantly slightly sloping. So you can let it run comfortably up to the Ruhr.
