The traditional Cumbria Coastal Way misses out the Cardurnock Peninsula, though it is listed as an optional alternative. I have included it as it would be a shame to miss the delights on offer here, from the Roman history at Bowness-on-Solway to the wildlife found on the coastal paths and moss boardwalks. The only downside is the vast majority of the walking is on roads, albeit very quiet ones.

You leave Kirkbride, cross the River Wampool and follow minor roads towards Anthorn, which is characterised by the many radio masts that stand on the site of a former military airfield. With the Solway Firth on one side and Moricambe Bay on the other, it is a wild and windswept peninsula, perfect for birdwatchers.

The road passes through the tiny settlement of Cardurnock as it rounds the peninsula and before long you are on the approach to Bowness-on-Solway, the end of Hadrian’s Wall. If your stomach is grumbling at this point, the Kings Arms is an excellent option for lunch. The route now picks up that of the Hadrian’s Wall Path, through Port Carlisle and into Glasson.

I’ve added an optional, short detour to the delightful Glasson Moss, a wetland paradise with boardwalks and a great observation tower. After Glasson, the route passes through Drumbrugh before the long, straight stretch across the vast Burgh Marsh. Burgh by Sands, a village which marks the end of stage 15, has little by way of accommodation, with the Greyhound Inn being your best bet. It does connect to Carlisle via the infrequent 93 bus service.
