Beginning in Wendover, stage three of the Chilterns Cycleway leads you 21 miles (35 km) over gentle hills to Markyate, a pretty Hertfordshire village on the edges of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Wooded countryside, luscious fields, grand estates and iron history await.
Within a few miles of leaving Wendover, you will find yourself in peaceful woodland. The road climbs for 2 miles (4km) towards St Leonards village. You will continue along quiet rural lanes, passing through Cholsbury, Wigginton, and Tring. A lovely market town, Tring has an excellent selection of cafes, pubs, and shops, as well as a zoological museum.
Next, you will ride towards Aldbury village, crossing the Tring railway tracks along the way. A short, steep climb will bring you into the beautiful woodland of the Ashridge Estate. The roads and lanes are flanked with beech trees and bluebells. You may even spot deer darting between the trees.
After 4 miles (6 km), you will reach Little Gaddesden village and the edge of the estate. From here, you will pass through the sleepy villages of Hudnall, Hudnall Common and Studham and enjoy views from the top of the gentle Pedley Hill. Surrounded by open commons, Studham is a great place for a picnic.
Your final destination of stage three is the attractive town of Markyate. Here, you will find a variety of architectural styles which reflect the town’s history: from timber-framed cottages harking from the 16th and 17th centuries to brick houses reflecting wealth from the coach trade during the 18th century. There is a Holiday Inn just outside Markyate to rest your legs for the night.
