The city name Lommatzsch gives the most important arable farming area in Saxony, the Lommatzscher Pflege, its name. The thickness of the loess layer is more than 15 m in places. The high fertility of this soil is the reason that this area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. After the Great Migration, Slavs settled in this area. Their main castle, Gana, was about 15 km away near Hof, municipality of Naundorf. With the eastward expansion of the East Franconian Empire, they were subjugated and Germanic settlers took over rule. The wealth of the historically grown courtyards can be seen from afar by their size and area. Today's Lommatzsch has four main pillars, agriculture, agricultural machinery, glass industry and vegetable processing for fine frozen products. The former Carl Menzel & Söhne glassworks is certainly worth mentioning. Carl Menzel was very committed to society and had company apartments built for his employees, the so-called "glass houses", as they are called by the population. Economic pressures and involvement ultimately resulted in his filing for bankruptcy in 1930. As a result, his sons founded their own glassworks. In the GDR, the Lommatzsch glassworks was the only one that produced mirror glass for motor vehicles. After the fall of the Wall, it was wound up. The production of toughened safety glass began with a new owner.
The tour can be done by bike.

I have often driven through the motorway bridge on the A14 near Zaschwitz. A dirt road always caught my eye. Today I just had to find out how far this would lead. With wise foresight I put on my rubber boots to be on the safe side, which later turned out to be the right thing to do. This targeted dirt road is a dead end. At the end of the field path I therefore had to stalk along the edge of the forest until I found a path to Scheergrund again. This led me through a very interesting valley, with many old quarries and bridges. As early as 1961, this area of around 58 hectares was placed under nature protection for the Buch monastery due to its geological features and historical importance. It is a shame that there is no continuous hiking trail from Zaschwitz through this valley. In accordance with the local conditions, rubber boots are only recommended. Also of interest is the Scheergrund watermill and the cottage opposite, which looks like it was from another time. At the moment, the large amount of dead wood along the forest path is problematic. Therefore always keep an eye on the treetops.

After having mastered the ascent (whether from the south or the north), the hiker is rewarded with a wonderful view (as long as the weather allows) of the Elbe valley and the surrounding rock formations. Simply wonderful, as long as the height of the viewpoints doesn't matter to anyone.

At the end of the hiking year, I accepted the invitation of two mountain sports fans and embarked on a little adventure between the health resort of Rathen, Hohnstein and Porschdorf. It was a very interesting, albeit challenging, hike. This tour is not for families with strollers or with small children, cyclists and hikers with height problems. Hiking experience and surefootedness are essential. The main problem was the large amount of dry leaves which can lead to slipping on the sometimes steep paths. In any case, one should pay attention to the paths or paths in the core zone of Saxon Switzerland.

After we were already on the bastion and had made the steep ascent through the Schwedenlöcher, there was little time left to visit the Königstein Fortress. The 3G rule applied here. We only had 2 hours to close at 6 p.m. To shorten the route, we took the fortress feeder from the Königstein car park. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for a guided tour through the casemates, although I would have liked to show the grandchildren (which is definitely worth it). But these were already done, so that the tour was completely sufficient. The fortress officially ends in October. After that it is only open on special days.

First of all, the speed is not right. We took the bus from the Bastei hiking car park to the turning area just before the Bastei bridge and back again (we had to take the short legs of the holiday children into consideration). After the photo stop on the bastion, we went to the old castle and then to the Amselsee. For the way back we took the ascent over the Schwedenlöcher.

The beautiful weather once again lured me out. What to do in a hurry? I didn't want to go far. Only a look in the "bag of tricks" (Komoot) helped. Since many have already discovered these or similar highlights before me, I only threaded them into a chain (round). (Thanks to all pioneers.) The result is the round from Lampertswalde Castle to the ponds (nature reserves) around Reudnitz.

Had to find out once again that the Via Porphyria has its Reitz. The path led me to the source of the red Rochlitz porphyry. What was new for me was that agates were found in the area around Biesern and copper ore was mined in Erlbachtal and silver ore in Vogelsang. Unfortunately I could not visit the pilgrimage church Heilig Kreuz in Wechselburg. It was just midday, which I didn't want to disturb. A nice round that I can only recommend. Please bring a little more time to visit Rochlitz Castle and Wechselburg Monastery.

Today's little wine tour led me from the Windmühle Boxdorf car park through the Fidlergrund in Radebeul to the Blechburg ruins. The many old wine terraces that were not cultivated again after the phylloxera plague were impressive. The next stop was the lookout point on the Jägerberg with a great view. Past the Ravensberg quarry, the path went along numerous wineries and listed buildings to the Hoflößnitz wine museum. This was followed by the descent to the Lößnitzgrund parallel to the "Lößnitzdackel" narrow-gauge railway. Then it went uphill again to the Pfeiffer to take a lunch break there. Unfortunately, many restaurants are closed on Mondays, so that only the rucksack had to be enough. The next stop was called the Bismarck Tower with an equally beautiful view. After the Bismarck tower we went to the Spitzhaus, with the Spitzhaus shell in front of it and the Spitzhaus staircase. Fortunately, this restaurant had a self-service counter on the patio, so that I could finally taste Saxon wine. Finally I headed for the Mäuseturm ruins. I would like to recommend to all hikers not to do this tour on Mondays if possible. Most of the taverns are also only open until October.
