The Sanctuary is beautiful.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino is located precisely in Mezzana, a fraction of San Severino Lucano (Pz). On the northern side of the Pollino massif, at an altitude of 1537 meters, stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino. Since 1975 it has been possible to reach the place of worship via a convenient driveway that has taken over from the old mule track. The religious complex includes the church, some rooms for the activities and the stay of the clergy and the staff who take care of guarding the place of worship. The Casa del Pellegrino, annexed to the Sanctuary, hosts devotees and those interested in experiencing a spiritual retreat. In 1970 the structure was enlarged and is built in Romanesque style. Inside there are three naves, with a wonderful wooden vault decorated with a precious rose window. A splendid wooden statue depicts the Madonna holding the Baby Child in her arms on the left, which in turn supports the terrestrial gobo. The Sanctuary is a pilgrimage destination for numerous Calabrian devotees from the south and a large group of faithful who come from the south of Basilicata. The alpine panorama, the huge trees, the centuries-old trunks, the valley full of woods, paths and the small streets that lead to the place of worship make this place wonderfully attractive and full of peace, ideal for experiencing a spiritual retreat in contact with the nature and with God. In the distance you can see San Severino Lucano and on the right the rocky massif descends to a sheer drop in a large and wide basin called "La Copia". In front of the Serra del Prete, the Serra di Viggianello, the Impiso hill and that of the Skyscraper, in the distance you can see the Sirino, the Monte Alpi and the Pollino plain and the Serra Dolcedorme. An evocative and full of emotions show embraces the spectator who remains astonished in front of this prestigious view.According to tradition, the statue was found in the cave and the cave is made up of rocky blocks. In the parish archive of San Severino Lucano there are no traces that testify to what time the sanctuary's origins date back, however it seems that its origins are connected to the 1700s. Vox populi tells that the history of the Sanctuary originates between 1725 and 1730 with an apparition of the Madonna to a shepherd as he led his flock to pasture on Mount Pollino. Amazed by the vision, the pastor had spread the news and by word of mouth the whole population had learned of it. A local woman named Rosa Maria pushed by her firm faith, in the company of her sister-in-law Vittoria, went to the mountain. Rosa Maria had left her husband, who was suffering from an incurable disease, and her son at home. While the two women walked the steep and tiring road that leads to the Pollino, they began to feel very thirsty but in the absence of water they asked the Virgin to quell the heat. A short distance away they saw a jet of water gush from a large stone in the shape of a basin. Next to it there was an entrance that led inside a cave from which they felt mysteriously attracted. When the two women entered the cave they noticed that in a corner there was a pile of rubble mixed with dirt that seemed to hide something. So they began to dig and found a chest with a woolen cloth in which the statue of the SS was wrapped. Virgin holding the Child. The two women returning home with the box in hand found Rosa Maria's husband miraculously healed. A moving legend that gave rise to the construction of the Sanctuary. The cavern of small dimensions and made up of large blocks of rock, in the past was visited by the faithful, on the occasion of his feast today due to the slippage of the rocky boulders it is no longer accessible to the public. The open space in front of the Chapel is surrounded by a tender meadow from which wild scents come, and to the left of those looking at the church there is a road that leads to a ledge on which a mountain reigns of beech and fir trees dominates, under this road find the cave. The feast in honor of the Madonna del Pollino is one of the most important celebrations of the Calabrian-Lucanian mountains. Every year thousands of pilgrims gather on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday of July to participate in the celebrations in honor of the SS. Virgin. The statue is transferred to the sanctuary in the summer months while in the winter it remains kept in the church of San Severino Lucano.

Petre de la Mola - A sophisticated prehistoric stone calendar on Monte Croccia
An interdisciplinary research group made up of archaeologists, geophysicists, geologists and astronomers from the University of Basilicata, the Faber Srl of Matera, the National Institute of Astrophysics and the La Sapienza University of Rome has begun the study of the megalithic complex called Petre de la Mola (Pietra della Mola), not far from the top of Monte Croccia, in the Park of Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane.Sophisticated surveys, carried out through the use of the most advanced technologies currently in use also in the field of Cultural Heritage, have revealed that the complex has direct alignments to the position of the Sun at noon and at sunset of the winter solstice and others that signal that to the equinoxes and the summer solstice.
It is therefore likely that the megalith was used by the ancient inhabitants of Monte Croccia as a stone calendar to indicate particular dates of the year, for ritual and practical purposes. The entire archaeological area, frequented from the Neolithic to the 4th century BC, covers an area of about 60,000 square meters and includes, in addition to the megalith, a fortified Lucanian settlement (4th century BC), located on the top of the mountain. This settlement is surrounded by several walls made of perfectly squared blocks; the best preserved section of the wall, variously restored, has a length of over 2 km and its main gate crosses the megalith to the point of the horizon where the sun rises at the equinoxes. The eventual confirmation of this data would indicate the conservation of a memory and the sacred value of the megalith until the end of the occupation of the site.

I'm so sorry about one thing about this lap, not being able to show the altitude profile and my data, unfortunately I don't know what happened and I lost the details. I try to tell them even if I had taken a fairytale ride.
I climbed in sequence the Gardena Pass, Sella Pass, Pordoi Pass, Campolongo Pass and Passo delle Erbe for a total of 81 km. in 03:20 at an average of 24Km / h with a total of 3100 meters in altitude !!!
I did a good thing but unfortunately I lost my data. However, I am more than satisfied with my performance!

Here at 2 km. from Cirigliano there is the Madonna della Grotta, splendid and marvelous, a small cave carved into the rock by a brigand returning from the galley. The Madonna is carried in procession on the first Sunday of May to return you to the village on August 15th.
Pure air, wonderful forest where a prayer never hurts!

Finally I climbed the Zoncolan, the hardest mountain, 13 km at an average of 9.5 km / h in 1 hour and 23 minutes. Very satisfied !!!!!!
The monster. The Kaiser. Call it what you want, what is considered one of the hardest climbs in Europe has many nicknames. Simply the Zoncolan. The Hell of the climbs, an extremely fitting epithet also because it marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri. "Abandon all hope, you who enter", reads a banner at the entrance to the ascent. It recites when you take the Monster from the Ovaro side, while tomorrow the Giro d’Italia will reach the top of the Zoncolan along the "soft" side of Sutrio. Morbido is in quotes because we are talking about a thrilling ascent, which will cross the legs of many cyclists and which will redesign the general classification. The crucial moment will come after leaving behind 193.3 kilometers and also the demanding Forcella di Monte Rest (10.5 km at 5.9% average gradient). But what are the grim slopes of the Zoncolan? There are 14.1 km at 8.5% average gradient. Total height difference of 1199 meters, from 531 meters a.s.l. di Sutrio you arrive at 1730 meters above sea level of the summit. First half a kilometer substantially flat, then you begin to get terribly serious and start 9 km with an average gradient of 8.3%, very constant (there are peaks above 9% and occasionally you go down to just over 7% ).After 9.5 km of ascent, the road flattens slightly near the Moro Refuge: it is 1500 meters at an average gradient of 4.5% where you will have to try to catch your breath before a nightmare finish. The last 3 km, in fact, are even at an average gradient of 13%! It never goes below double digits. The partials, for every 500 meters: 10.4%, 13.2%, 11.2%, 14.2%, 11.4%, 18.8% in the last 500 m! Diabolical, there are no other words to describe it. The maximum slope? Startles: 27%, when there is 1 km left to finish. You can roll over. Steel legs will be needed, history is made here
