Very nice round from Usseln over the long side to Hemmighausen and then back through the Diemeltal. The views of the Adorfer Land from the long side are great. And the path through the Diemeltal always goes: green, lush meadows to the left and right of the stream, hardly any other hikers or cyclists on the way and easy to walk.

Cloudy weather in the Upland. I tuck the umbrella under my arm and go anyway. On the way I hardly meet other hikers, only a deer takes a little time for me. The rain catches up with me on the Schneeberg.

Today's central theme is the plums near Borne. Two weeks ago we were standing between trees with unripe fruits, today they have already been harvested up to the reach of our arms. But we still manage to collect a few more. It is definitely enough for a crumble and stewed plums.A little further on someone harvests the plums with a fruit picker - it looks like arduous work. He likes to let us get involved in a conversation and tells us that in GDR times you had to pay five marks to the community and then you were allowed to harvest. Today it's different, you can just go there and pick. The plums were then cooked to the sauce in a large pan on the gas stove for five hours. He still does that today and the family in Leipzig is always very happy when they get a few glasses. And yes, mushrooms are plentiful this year. It's not always like that, but right now they're like, well, mushrooms popping up.In fact, barely turning into the forest, we find a representative frilled mother hen and, in the course of the hike, many more edible mushrooms. In Klein Glien there are vegan cakes for us in Café Milan before we continue to Hagelberg to the Apple Trail. The trees have also already been harvested or have not borne much.Shortly before Bad Belzig we switch to beautiful, but in parts quite bumpy cobblestone paths on the southern route and hike back to Borne.A super nice day and a super nice way.

The small but very noisy GDL has paralyzed the railway. Or at least tried to. We still get to Mühlenbeck-Mönchmühle today and start our hike through the Tegeler Fließ there. We are breaking new ground for us. And find the day of hiking wonderful: The weather is perfect and, apart from a few hiking trails close to the settlements, not much is going on. In Schildow we see advertising displays for the Normandie restaurant and decide to take a little detour. We find a hotel on the back burner, but with a beautiful garden. Cook and service in personal union act in a mobile snack trailer, beer and food are served in disposable dishes and the potato pancakes are rather mediocre. But the beer is good and in the garden with the uncut lawn we think life is terrific. Here is the recording from frank: komoot.de/tour/478232778:

The starting point for the Winterberger Hochtour on the Kahler Asten can be easily reached by car or bus. However, if you prefer to take a sporty approach and want to start running from Winterberg, I recommend this short introductory stage over five kilometers in length. You start at the lower gate in the center of Winterberg, walk a short distance through the urban area of the winter sports resort and finally reach the Philosophenweg in the valley of the Nuhne. At Buchenweg you dive back into the village for a short distance. The slopes of the surrounding mountains show a variety of winter sports facilities, such as lifts, ski slopes or toboggan runs and the legendary ski jump on the southwest slope of the Herrloh is easy to see.

Over the small Sonneborn creek and the Rauchloh with its magnificent view of the surroundings, it goes on quiet forest paths up to the Kahler Asten. Take a little time to climb the Astenturm. The panorama from up here is stunning and you can already see where you will hike in the next few days and where the peaks of the Winterberger Hochtour are.

Streams, border paths, a historical place of execution and hilltop villages characterize this stage of the Winterberger Hochtour. And of course you always enjoy the wonderful views over the wide meadows, green stream valleys and mountains of the region. After starting in Mollseifen, you first follow the Mollseifer Bach and then the Odeborn down to the valley. Often you hike along the edge of the forest with a view of the stream and the green meadows. Halfway to the valley you will notice the historic Zwistmühle, a small, yellow and dark brown painted mill and with a slightly crooked roof. It was a grain mill and, due to its proximity to the border, a controversial object for many years over the question of who should now own the territory. When you arrive in the valley, cross the L 721 and follow the picturesque Hesselbach to the Höhendorf Hohenleye on the border path between Hochsauerlandkreis and the Siegen-Wittgenstein district. This is also where the beautiful Hoheleyer Hut is located, a wonderful place to rest and refresh yourself - the homemade cake should be super good.On the Grenzweg and the Höhweg you continue over magical meadows and a landscape with a wide sky. The views over the land of a thousand mountains are wonderful. Through Langewiese and past the beautiful, small church, you hike to Gerkenstein. The view of the small hamlet Lenneplätze below in the gently rolling valley is magnificent.Only a short distance and you have reached the destination of this wonderful and demanding round tour. The Kahle Asten with its great heathland and the stunning Sauerland panorama is now in front of you. Take some more time to enjoy the atmosphere and let this great hiking experience fade away. No place is better suited for this than the Hochheide on the Kahler Asten.

Forest. Mountains. Outlook. The southern arc of the Winterberger Hochtour leads you to the next eight hundred of the tour and to the border with the Wittgensteiner Bergland. On the route you are almost alone with yourself and the most beautiful nature, because apart from the start and finish of the stage there are no villages. You don't need it either, because an infinite number of wonderful places invite you to picnic and relax. So don't forget to pack enough provisions and drinks. On the outskirts of Züschen you walk over the old way of the cross to the chapel of the cross. Already here you have a nice overview of the place in the valley of the Nuhne. The path then continues steadily uphill and turns onto a wonderful high-altitude hiking trail at Hackelberg. You cross the upper ski slopes of Züschen and finally reach the 816 meter high Ziegenhelle with the 15 meter high observation tower. The all-round view from up here is wonderful. You can look up to the Clemensberg near Hildfeld and the Kahler Asten. On the Ziegenhellenkammweg it goes downhill again to the former Böses Holz court yard. There was evidence that from 1375 to 1580 there was a free court in which every free man had the right to judge his own kind. Later, landlords, nobles and bailiffs seized this right and the free courts lost their importance. The execution sites were far away from the places in the woods and some field names still indicate this. Such as the Zwistberg (Streitberg), which you pass a few meters further. As far as Mollseifen, the stage destination, it goes downhill and again and again you have wonderful views of the Kahler Asten and the surrounding area. The place is tiny, but in the cozy Mollseifer Hof the guests will be happy to pamper you at the end of the beautiful day of hiking.

On this wonderful hike with many ups and downs, stunning views of the land of a thousand mountains await you. You wander through dense forests, open fields and lush green meadows. The head becomes clear and the heart expands. And so that your stomach and legs feel good, it is essential to have enough drinks and provisions in your backpack, because there are hardly any places to stop for refreshments on this route. After starting in Grönebach you hike on the old church path Elkeringhausen-Grönbach to the cross on the Hamm. At 700 meters above sea level, a wonderful view of the Winterberg plateau and the Kahler Asten awaits you here. Then it goes 200 meters steeply downhill. One can hardly imagine that this path for churchgoers of bygone times was not just the Sunday path to worship. For a long time they also brought their dead to the Grönebach cemetery along this steep path. Finally you will reach the pretty village of Elkeringhausen in the green valley of the Orke.Take a short deep breath and the next ascent can come. It's really steep up to the Alte Grimme at about 750 meters above sea level. The panorama of Elkeringhausen and the surrounding mountains is terrific. At the summit cross and the refuge you can relax and have a picnic before you descend again - in parts quite steep - into the valley of the Orke. Halfway you will pass the disused Elend colliery. It was in operation for ore mining until 1914, but had to be shut down due to inexperience. There is one last mountain to overcome until you reach your destination. The path goes steadily uphill, but no longer challenges you with steep climbs. Once at the top, you will find a nice place for a break at the Franzosenkreuz am Lagerstein. A previous cross at this point served centuries ago to identify the church path that began here on Königsstrasse: travelers were now under the protection of the Franks. From the Franzosenkreuz it goes downhill to the destination of the stage. Züschen is a pretty, small town in the Nuhnetal. Between the half-timbered and slate houses, you will notice the reconstructed water wheels, which point to the long tradition of water use. Züschen is a recognized climatic health resort with a wide range of restaurants and accommodation.

This stage is best started with a good breakfast, because the first four kilometers lead you to the highest mountain in Westphalia. Your mountain qualities are in demand - you will be rewarded with a wonderful path through the delightful Sauerland landscape. And then comes the freestyle: The Hocheide in the Neuer Hagen nature reserve with its beautiful heather areas and a gold village are the other highlights on the now easy, almost incline-free path. You start this wonderful tour in Niedersfeld and hike uphill right on the outskirts. The first few meters are gentle up but then the hike becomes a real mountain tour on the 843 meter high Langenberg. It's good that you brought enough to drink with you, because there will only be a stop at the Hochheide again. At the summit cross you will find a nice picnic area to rest and pause. Then it's a short distance along the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. At the edge of the path you can see old and partly badly weathered boundary stones and again and again you have wonderful views of the surroundings. Shortly after you have crossed a small stream, you turn south-east and reach the beautifully situated Hochheide Hut Niedersfeld. This is perfect because a short break is just the thing now.The area of the largest mountain heath in north-west Germany begins directly behind the hut. The nature reserve is about 74 hectares and is located on the northern slope of the 836 meter high Clemensberg. The fascinating landscape was created by grazing animals for centuries. Often the top layer was chopped off to use it as litter in the barn. Plants that are satisfied with little nutrients settled on the impoverished forest floor: heather, berry bushes and a few pines. Now it goes gently downhill to Hildfeld. The pretty place is one of the gold villages in the Sauerland. No, not because of the precious metal, but because the lovingly prepared villages won a gold award in the competition “Our village should be more beautiful”. You continue through open fields to Grönebach, your stage destination for this hike.

This delightful stage begins with an absolute highlight: the Astenturm is the highest building in North Rhine-Westphalia. When the weather is clear, you can see as far as Kassel and of course over the entire Rothaargebirge. You hike through a high heath, let yourself be impressed by the winter sports facilities of the region, pass some beautiful villages and enjoy the wonderful view - not only at the top of the sky.The high heather on the Kahler Asten has been formed by grazing over the past centuries and when it blooms the atmosphere is incomparable. Enjoy the view of the surrounding area and, if you like, you can top the view with a visit to the Astenturm. The weather station is also located here in the tower, which supplies all media with weather data from the Kahler Asten. That means, if the sun is shining and summer temperatures prevail during your visit, the whole country will know a little later. The natural history exhibition on the ground floor is also very interesting.

You now hike downhill into the Renautal and always have very good views of the ski slopes and lifts of Winterberg and of the Hunau with the striking television tower. You reach the outskirts of Altastenberg via a narrow path with roots and then follow the route over the old church path at the Himmelskrone to Silbach. The place was mentioned as far back as the 13th century and for centuries the residents have been mining. Today it is a popular, lovingly cared for holiday resort. You follow the green brook valley of the nameless to Siedlinghausen. If you like, you can take a short break in the village and visit the church in the center of the village: The integration of the new nave into the old tower is really worth seeing.
The long ascent to the Hoher Hagen saddle begins on the outskirts of Siedlinghausen. The path leads you alternately through beautiful forest, open fields and green meadows. As far as Niedersfeld, your stage destination, it then goes gently downhill on narrow paths. Would you like to cool off after a long hike? Hillebachsee has a beautiful bay where you can swim or sunbathe to your heart's content.
