After last week the ultimate best fresh snow was everywhere in the Black Forest, the temperatures have risen quite a bit since then ... Today was perhaps one of the last days on which you can still go on a ski tour. Whereby, maybe next week it should get colder again and snow. We will see!
In any case, we used this morning to go on a ski tour that we haven't done yet. From Schönenberg to the Belchen! The snow was anything but good and quite wet and muddy, but we still had fun! The forest looked pretty dirty because a lot of needles and lichens fell from the trees. Fresh snow is somehow much nicer! Nevertheless it was a great tour and the view from the Belchen is simply terrific!

Actually, we just wanted to go for a short hike and just chose the Kybfelsen for that. We hadn't even considered that it was facing west and this really spectacular sunset, which we had absolutely not expected, was all the more amazing!
The whole day it was gray and cloudy in Freiburg and so it was pure luck that the sun came in between the clouds at the last moment before it set behind the Vosges. And what colors they were today! We couldn't stop, every few seconds "Boooa is that nice !!" accept!
And once again it has been proven: It is ALWAYS worthwhile to go outside!

The cold water run from the Schauinsland is a Freiburg legend - there has to be snow down in the city so that there is enough to ski from the Schauinsland all the way to the valley station in Bohrer. And that probably only happens once every few years. The last time there was such good snow conditions in 2015/16 and before that in 2009, but I was not in Freiburg during the winter. So we had to take advantage of that, even if we were a little tired from yesterday. But who knows if you can ever do the cold water descent again !?It starts up at the Schauinsland parking lot, then a section through the forest follows. Looking at the map, I had thought that it would probably not be that good, I was looking forward to the open meadow sections. But then it turned out that it was exactly the other way around: the path through the forest was absolutely brilliant! And the meadows further down were okay, but not outstanding, because the further down we got, the wetter and heavier the snow became. All in all, however, a really brilliant descent, especially due to the fact that it went down from Freiburg's local mountain and the right conditions almost never occur :-)
Quite awesome to have such an outdoor sports paradise on the doorstep!

Can you go on a ski tour with an altitude of 2000 meters in the Black Forest? In the Alps this is nothing unusual, you can even do it with just one ascent. In the Black Forest, where the mountains are significantly lower, you have to be a bit creative when planning the route and accept the fact that you have to take your skis on and off very often during the tour. The route consists of a lot of parts that we have already done as individual tours:Start at the Stollenbach in the dark to be at the Feldberg at sunrise. From there down to the Grafenmatt parking lot and up to the Grafenmatt. Then cross towards the Herzogenhorn and up to the summit. We have brought bread for breakfast before we make the descent to Bernau Dorf. Along the downhill route you go up to the Herzogenhorn and back to Grafenmatt. Instead of going back here on the direct route to the Feldberg, we drive the Ahornbühl descent down to the Fahler Loch and climb up the opposite slope towards the Todtnauer Hütte. On the way we pass the Fahler waterfalls. After what feels like an eternity, we are back on top of the Feldberg and make the final descent down to Stollenbach (with a short ascent). Conclusion:
Insane tour! The sunrise and the atmosphere was phenomenal, probably a sunrise that I will never forget for a lifetime. The colors, the silence, the view. Just unbelievable!Up to the second time on the Herzogenhorn everything went like clockwork. At least in terms of strength. We had a few problems with our skins: due to the morning cold of approx. -10 to -15 ° C, as well as the frequent falling up and down, the adhesive was so cold that the skins would not stay on the skis. That was really annoying, because you have to run very carefully and it can still happen that the fur says goodbye while running and you slip away. Fortunately, it was wonderfully sunny and warm on the Herzogenhorn and we were able to warm and dry the skins. It went better for the rest of the day because it got warmer. After we were on the Herzogenhorn for the second time, I could feel that I was getting tired. After all, that was over 1000 meters in altitude. I found the Ahorn descent into the Fahler Loch very strenuous and the subsequent ascent of about 600 meters in altitude on the Feldberg felt like it was forever. It was funny that we were completely alone on the Stollenbach in the morning and in the late afternoon too - but all hell must have been going on in between! In the morning the slopes were still quite untracked, in the afternoon they were completely disheveled. It's good that we escaped the hustle and bustle and had it so quiet there!

There was sooooo much fresh snow in the last two days! But all the snow also means that particularly steep slopes are no longer quite safe to ski on, which is why we have chosen a simple ski tour for this morning: the Kandel. However, it was already indicated during the ascent that the Kandel (as is well known) is a rather flat mountain and accordingly the descent would not be particularly steep. Basically good in such snow conditions. However, in the end it was so flat that all the snow slowed us down more than we could have advanced. It didn't help, we had to push hard with the sticks. Seen in this way, the tour is perhaps more for snowshoe hikers than for ski touring. But then probably really great!

Today the classic in wonderful sunshine: from Bernau to the Herzogenhorn. The view today was absolutely awesome! The descent in the upper part was great, the snow almost as compressed as a rolled slope. The lower part was almost like a mogul slope - not that easy to ski. Hopefully there will be fresh snow again soon!

Today we got up very early again and went on a ski tour to the Feldberg before everyone else. In the beginning I was pretty tired and the prospect that it would stay dark for a while wasn't exactly mood-enhancing 🙃. In fact, it got light faster than expected and was really fun! The prospects were gigantic today and there was nobody but us. Only on the last descent did the first other people run up. Getting up early is worth it!

Probably the next ski tour from Freiburg. Start in St. Wilhelmer Tal, then up to Stübenwasen, down to Todtnauberg and back again. The descent from Stübenwasen into St. Wilhelmer Tal is quite steep in the first section. Driving with fresh snow without tracks is probably really cool, with many tracks, as was the case today, not that easy. The view was practically zero and we felt like we were in a thick foggy soup. A little adventure 😉
Oh yes, and the snow crystals were just incredibly beautiful! I've never seen them before - all the trees were full of them!

At the end of the year there was another really extensive ski tour today! From Grafenmatt to the Herzogenhorn, then down to Bernau, back up to the Herzogenhorn and from there back to Grafenmatt. Then the FIS descent down to Fahl and the last ascent back to the Grafenmatt car park. How lucky we are to live in this paradise and even have snow this year!
And with today's tour, the 100,000 meters of altitude for 2020 are done ;-)
