Información sobre Martin Donat

Hey! :)

Out of Brilon, into nature! This tour has some vertical meters to offer, otherwise it is easy to master for humans and animals. Above all, Sancho was pleased that he was allowed to walk without a leash almost without a break.Since it takes a little longer with a dog, you should pack enough provisions. In between you will always come across beautiful break locations, some with the best view. Here you can sit down, give the dog and yourself some rest and then start with renewed strength. If you want to stop by, we recommend the Café Rosenbogen Heidrich in Gutshof Schloss Bruchhausen or, almost at the end of the tour, the Hochheidehütte, where you can get drinks and delicious cakes (but at Hochheide prices). After that it is not far to the refuge where we stayed. If you and your dog are a bit more comfortable, you can continue to Hildfeld or Willingen, where you will definitely find a holiday apartment or a guesthouse that will give you shelter.

This tour starts and ends on the site of the former Ewald colliery. From there you roll over a wide gravel path away from the colliery, leave the Hoheward dump behind you and soon reach the Rhine-Herne Canal, which you cross a little later over a cool old railway bridge to allow a little "backyard air" sniff. After a few kilometers of the canal you change to the Emscher. Once it was considered Germany's dirtiest river, today it has already been renatured and recultivated in many places. You cycle along a piece of the Emscher that is still enclosed in boulders and is waiting to be renatured. But the bike path is already there, very beautiful and, unlike in the past, the Emscher no longer smells. Now it's getting more urban again, but the route somehow meanders over trails and paths past the traffic. You hear a road here and there, but rarely see anything of it while driving around Recklinghausen. As soon as you leave the city, beautiful railway and forest paths bring you back to the Hoheward dump. At the end of the day, a small “summit sprint” is definitely part of this round, which you consequently finish with the best view and a cool descent.

Why did I call this tour “Sea to Sky the Ruhrpott way”? To be honest, it had to be quick: I scouted this tour for the Gravel Games and the organizers wanted me to give the group a “crisp” name shortly before that. Somehow, despite the hurry, the name fits pretty well: "Sea" stands for the water at the beginning of the round, ie for the Rhine-Herne Canal, for the Emscher and for the "Herner Meer". “Sky” stands for the grand finale of the tour, which will take you up to 152.5 meters. The Hoheward dump is just as high and if you are here before, a “summit sprint” should definitely be on your bucket list! Here you are as close to heaven as there are few other places in the pot.In between, all sorts of major and minor highlights await you on this tour. I think the round is wonderfully varied and has a bit of everything to offer that goes with the pot. Be it the ancient railway bridge right at the beginning that takes you to the somewhat more remote side of the canal or be it the beautiful secret path through the Brandheide, which lets you completely forget that you are almost in the middle of the city. Numerous railway cycle paths ensure that you can also speed up a little in between, while small “secret paths” here and there give you a real gravel adventure feeling.Overall, this tour is relatively easy to drive. With the exception of the ascent at the very end up to the dump, hardly any vertical meters await you, and there are no technical hurdles. On the other hand, you should be careful when the weather is very good and you might still be out on the weekend: Especially the sections on the canal and on the former railway lines can be a bit crowded.
