Oulx is an hour's drive from Puy, just across the Italian border and the departure point for our trip along the Strade Assietta. This kilometre-long gravel road is almost entirely above 2000 meters. This road was once used by the military, now it is mainly used by cyclists, off-road motorcycles and jeeps. From the Strada it goes up and down and we cross several cols such as the Colle dell'Assietta (2,474 m), Colle Blegier (2,381 m) and Col Basset (2,424 m). The views over the deep valleys and surrounding peaks on the left and right are phenomenal. After 30 kilometers we turn off to the Strada Militare del Colle della Vecchia. Another military road, but a little higher. With an average gradient of almost 11%, it leads to an altitude of 2,800 meters, making it one of the highest roads in Italy. The road surface shows that this road has not been maintained since the Second World War. Jeeps and motorcycles don't come here. Along the way we meet a single mountain biker. With our heads in the clouds we cycle concentrated on the paths and look hundreds of meters into the depth from the narrow ridges. After the highest point of the Cima Ciantiplagnade we descend to the Colle Finestre.Because it is already late, we decide to take an alternative route to Oulx. At first glance this seemed like a good move, but unfortunately I forgot to look at the profile of the last kilometers of the final climb. So we came across a two kilometer long single track. Straight up. And then that two kilometers is quite long.Arriving at the col we are off. Today we touch almost 3,000 unpaved altimeters. Via part of the Strade Assietta we descend to Oulx, throw the bike in the car and walk into the nearest pizzeria. Due pizze e birra per favore!

Between the long days of work in our mountain hotel Saint Roch, I like to jump on my bike. From Puy Saint Vincent I drive within an hour to Pre Madame Carle, an amazing valley with a glacier in the heart of the Ecrins Massif. I had the road, the mountains and the evening to myself. #enjoyyourevenings

The Col du Granon is easy to cycle from Briançon. I lifted it over the asphalt. A thick 11 kilometers, an average of 9% uphill. Once at the top at 2400 meters down an old military gravel road. Much less steep and except for a few rougher parts, good passable.

Fantastic ascent! As far as we know, this is the highest point in the Alps that can be reached with a gravel bike without pushing / carrying.

Galibier from both sides with Jip. Still one of the most beautiful climbs. Pressure on the road, cars, cyclists, motorcycles. Crepes in Valloire and back again.
