Algo sobre Mount_Magdalena

"Schau, die schöne Welt!"('Look, the beautiful world!' – said my 3-year old self marvelling at a local mountain view.)I look after Collection content here at komoot so you might see me researching and planning all sorts of envy-inducing routes ...and occasionally getting to ride some of them too! I'm originally from Austria but am currently living on England's sunny(ish) South Coast.Whether it's cycling, running or hiking — spending time outdoors is my life therapy! I started cycle commuting when living in London and trying to save money on public transport. However, I found my real passion for cycling a few years later. First by becoming part of a close-knit fixed gear community when I lived in the North West and then through experiencing that amazing sense of freedom when I bought my first road bike in 2013.I currently enjoy a real mix of cycling - road/touring, gravel/bikepacking, a spot of MTBing and pulling my baby son in his trailer.

One of those local rides where you go into full appreciation mode, “how beautiful is it around it?” Bustling promenade and pebble beaches, gravel paths and country lanes all to oneself, white cliffs and endless green hills, this is a bit of an ode to the South Downs and I was excited to show some of my secret (and not so secret) favourite route choices to Andy for the fully remote (socially) Distance(d) event. 30 miles may not seem that challenging but we made sure we stuffed those full to the brim with fun and thunder!
The route took us out of Eastbourne towards the hospital and then hitting the Downs via the infamous Butts Brow (road) climb. Jackets off it was after that! We soon joined the SDW route down into Jevington continuing past the Eight Bells pub and then left (and keeping right) on a bridleway towards Folkington which leads to the bottom of the Long Man, an ancient hill figure - here goes our trail side art!
From there we descended into Alfriston, one of England’s oldest villages for a cheeky (outside) take-away coffee and appreciation of other fancy bikes (and their interesting owners) parked up in the village square.
Climbing back out of Alfriston via the leg-burning High n’Over road climb, our next destination was South Hill Barn at the edge of Seaford which leads down to the beach at Cuckmere Haven where we would attempt our river crossing.
It’s been a while that I’ve been down there and I had no idea if it was currently possible, the river layout and management has changed lots over the last years. To our (my?) delight it was perfectly possible and really added to the sense of adventure of this local loop. So shoes off and hike across it was. The weather also turned a bit gloomy at this stage but it didn’t take long for the sun to reappear.
From Exeat we continued through the forest to tick off our singletrack pics for the bingo card! And what a great route choice it was, so many cool trails that are actually good fun to ride on a gravel bike. Back at the top of Friston forest by "the pond" and getting a bit tight on time, we opted for the more 'boring' road route back into Eastbourne. When I say boring, I'm talking about Beachy Head Road, arguably one of the most beautiful roads to ride in the whole of the UK – smoothest tarmac and white cliffs all inclusive! And the road down into Eastbourne, featuring a couple of proper Alpine-style switchbacks, well that never fails to put a smile on your face, no matter how many times you’ve ridden it. Last stop-off to pick some litter (unfortunately, endless opportunities in town and on the seafront) and a well deserved post ride drink back at mine. 👌More of this please!
