Small winter hike in the NSG Lange Rhön: Icy wind with sleet showers at almost 900 meters above sea level, you are almost alone on the trail. Just the right thing for us, wonderful snow, it crunches under our feet. The trees are surrounded by ice, the fog freezes on the branches, and bizarre sculptures are created. Every 50 meters there is a wooden stick that indicates the direction, you can hear a few voices from afar, but you can't see much. The fog mystically envelops the trees, bushes, actually the entire landscape. It's very nice if you like the quiet, away from the crowds that we saw on the way home at the Red Moor. In summary, we did everything right. Get out early into nature where it is too wet and too cold for most people.

To Hohmichelstein: A dry day is reported, so you could go on a small tour. Paul once drew my attention to the basalt hilltop near Rudlos (the smallest part of Lauterbach). This approx. 30 meter high basalt hilltop with a great view was unknown to me. We drive to the first destination, the quarry of Frischborn, via Lauterbach and Frischborn. A former basalt quarry has been upgraded here. Small huts, tables and benches invite you to celebrate and linger. Not far from here is Eisenbach Castle on the Vulkanradweg. It was first mentioned in a document in 1217 and is located on the Eisenbach river, which is a tributary of the Lauter. After being destroyed in 1269, it was rebuilt by the feudal knight Eisenbach within ten years. After the Eisenbachers died out in 1429 (the Golden Knight) Hermann Riedesel received the fief. From then on, the gentlemen called themselves Riedesel zu Eisenbach. It continues on the country road in the direction of Stockhausen, halfway along a forest path leads to the day's destination, the 499 meter high Hohmichelstein, one of many basalt peaks in the Vogelsberg. Unfortunately, the great view remained hidden from us, dense fog limited the view to about 100 meters. After the entry in the summit book, it was clear that we would be back. The way back took us through the old town of Lauterbach to Maar and past Wernges airfield back to Grebenau.

Snow only in the high altitudes, Rimberg, Ibrakuppe and Herzberg
The sun is shining, the sky is slightly cloudy, the right weather for a winter tour. I start in the direction of Ochsenkopf, the highest elevation in the Wallersdorf district with an altitude of 420 meters. The path leads me past Herzberg Castle to Hof Huhnstadt, from here I follow the country road to behind the A5 motorway bridge. Now it goes on on a forest path to the summit of the Rimberg, which with almost 600 meters and a transmission mast of the Hessischer Rundfunk can be seen from afar. The snow up here is fun, it was also my wish to ride in the snow. On the map I am now looking for a way to Ibra that is still unknown to me. I decide to drive past the 380 meter high Klingelberg and get to the center of the village. My decision to drive a dirt road to the top was not that great, the rear wheel spun a lot despite the strong lugs. Wet and muddy passages followed one another until shortly before the Frieda hut, which is about 450 meters above sea level below the Ibrakuppe. Unfortunately, the way to the top was blocked because of a hunt. After a hot tea, I continued the tour towards Ibra and then to Machtlos. The climb to Rimberg follows before a descent with a 13% gradient takes me to Breitenbach. From here a forest path leads me to Herzberg Castle, initially lightly snowy, later with a closed snow cover. A warm welcome and a happy new year. With a face mask I step into the castle tavern and look forward to one of the many delicious dishes on the menu. I already ask about another Komoot meeting up here at the castle this year, at the end of May and beginning of June, that's the idea. After a very good steak with pepper sauce and a beer, I head home. The sun has long since gone, it has also gotten colder, but the forest still looks beautiful. A great winter day with a great tour.

New Years Tour Rhön 2022, Steinwand-Fuldaer Haus-Wasserkuppe-Guckaisee: We start our first tour in 2022 after a hearty breakfast. Start is at the Ziegelhof in the Rhön, over the Hochrhönring you go to the Steinwand. With its 645 meters it is an extension of the Maulkuppe (706 meters), the 100 meter long wooded rock face is approx. 20 meters high. After a circumnavigation we drive towards Fuldaer Haus and further towards Grabenhöfchen. The fog partially obscures the view. The tour leads over the Weiherkuppe 759 meters in altitude to Abtsroda and on to the Wasserkuppe. Up here at approx. 950 meters, the fog does not allow a distant view. After a hot tea, the descent to the Guckaisee comes, past the horse's head with 875 meters of altitude, it goes slowly and steadily downhill. The Guckaisee leisure facility is located at around 700 meters above sea level and consists of two small lakes. The cycle path leads us back to the Ziegelhof via Poppenhausen. A nice varied tour in the new year.

Waiting hill, Hatterode and Ochsenkopf: A short round in the rain-free time, it goes in the direction of Hohleicher Kopf (410 meters) and Dreiherrnstein. After almost 2.5 kilometers, turn left over the Burgenweg to the waiting knoll with an altitude of approx. 380 meters. A larger bare area offers a great view of the Rimberg, which is still hidden in the clouds. The paths are sometimes very damp and therefore also slippery. In addition to the many tree stumps covered with moss, small plants can also be seen on the area. It won't be long before Mother Nature has spread her guidelines over the area. Smaller water points or wetlands are along the way. It is nice to see how the different ages of the forest harmonize together, from the seedling to the weathered tree stump. I come to the Schlitzer Höhenweg which leads me to Hatterode (a district of Breitenbach am Herzberg). What a view I have here, not only the Rimberg (592 meters in altitude) and the rest stop on the A5, also Herzberg Castle above Hatterode shows its towers and far in the distance you can see the transmission tower on the Eisenberg near Oberaula. There are many marked hiking trails here, from the Borgmannweg, Bonifatiuspfad, Burgenweg, Jossa Weg and, last but not least, the Lutherweg 1521. The next destination is the Ochsenkopf via Wallersdorf on the Herzberger path. I leave Hatterode behind me and run parallel to the Burgenweg in the direction of Jakobdöll Weg, which flows into the forest just before the Ochsenkopf. I follow the path at the edge of the forest to the Borgmannweg which leads me back into the valley. It's just over a thousand steps from here and I'll be back. At this time of year you also meet one or the other, there is always a little chat and that's nice.

Snow tour: Finally there is the desired snow, even if only for a short time, according to the weather report. At a crisp 4 degrees minus, take a quick lap. It's a lot of fun to drive in the snow. Warm clothing and the right tires are the most important things, but also avoid ruts as these are usually icy. Concentration and reaction are also part of it when the front wheel slips. It was a great tour, had to be.

Historic old town of Alsfeld: A short tour in good weather takes me to Alsfeld. Via Grebenau on the country road to Eifa and further on the bike path to the historic old town of Alsfeld. The viaduct near Eifa arouses my interest and I grab the camera right away. The ravages of time have already gnawed here. When I arrive in the old town, I first stop by my trusted bicycle dealer. Afterwards I drive through the old town with the beautiful half-timbered houses, European model city is the title Alsfeld bears. Over 400 preserved half-timbered houses and the world-famous town hall make it known far beyond the country's borders. The way back takes me over the Homberg to Rainrod, then I continue in the direction of Schwarz am Auerberg back home.
