When the weather was nice, we wanted to go to the highlands of Pico. We had already driven here on the drive from the airport to our quarters and were fascinated by the landscape. Unfortunately, there is no designated circular hike, so we quickly rescheduled part of the Lagoa Trail to a circular hike. The way back was characterized by wonderful views of the south coast and São Jorge. Unfortunately, the paths here have a lot of asphalt and gravel roads, but the landscape is fantastic. It is worth waiting for clear weather.

The longest lava cave in Portugal should be worth a hike. The paths up here are not spectacular. The hike through the wine-growing region, on the other hand, is spectacular. The lava that formed new land down here came exactly through the lava tube, which you can then visit. Viticulture is carried out here with an incredible amount of effort. The path through further agricultural areas, all of which are secured with walls in a similarly laborious way, goes over an ash path. You think you are still practicing in the jungle until you suddenly find yourself on pastures with cows and goats. The lava cave is an absolute must on this hike. Another eventful day on Pico

On our last day on São Miguel there was only time for a "little round". As with the previous hikes, we really enjoyed nature. We have also expanded our knowledge of history. All in all, it was a very sweaty hike after the thunderstorm this morning, but it is very worthwhile.

Actually, it should go around the lake. Actually there was the nice detour to the Pico do Ferro and the round trip from Pico, as described in the Michael Müller travel guide, didn't really work because the way down is blocked. Accordingly, we no longer went around the whole lake and preferred to make the detour to the fumaroles here in Furnas. Absolutely worth seeing and a great, albeit strenuous, hike
