We needed to break up a journey between a family gathering in Bradford, West Yorkshire and getting home to Cockermouth, Cumbria, so we decided to take our first trip to Cautley Spout in the Howgills area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Cautley Spout is the highest cascade waterfall in England at nearly 200m and we walked up from Sedbergh to the base of the waterfall, hiking steeply beside it on a well-trodden path to top out on The Calf which is the highest point of the range at 676m. The Howgills is a wonderful area to explore if you love watching the contours of a map come to life in front of your eyes. On a good day, the views to the Lake District are stunning.
