The Kepler Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, a series of multi-day treks known for their exceptional grandeur and beauty and managed by the DOC (Department of Conservancy). The Kepler Track passes through many of the wonders that make up Fiordland National Park: rainforests, ridge paths and wetlands. You'll pass under the woods and above the clouds as well as finding two huge lakes and the mythical Waiau River (Lord of the Rings fans will know!). You’re never far from the fjords and will have plenty of opportunities to admire them. This trek can be done in 3, 4 or 5 days depending on your pace. When I did it in 2019, I decided to take my time and do it in 5 days. I’ve recreated the route I took in this Collection.
The Kepler Track is not the wildest of the Great Walks, probably because it’s relatively new. Unlike others, it doesn’t trace old historical Maori tracks and instead dates from 1988 – created to meet the growing demands of walkers. It brings together everything a hiker could hope for: panoramic views, varied paths, well placed huts.
As you can imagine, the Great Walks are remarkable and attract many walkers. To regulate the flow, the DOC has introduced access rules and wild camping is prohibited on all the Great Walks. Each route therefore allows as many hikers per day as it can hold in its accommodation. You need to obtain an access permit which will allow you to book your beds in the huts and campsites managed by the DOC. Each stage is designed to end in one of these accommodations which makes it a little easier for you to organise. This also means you can hike in peace and not worry about finding somewhere to sleep.
You will find all the information you need to make reservations on the DOC website: doc.govt.nz
Don’t attempt this hike outside the high season (from April to December) as the weather conditions become extremely challenging with wind, cold and snow. The passage on the ridges and on the whole of Luxmore Mountain is reserved for experienced climbers.
The Kepler Track has two entrances. One is in the town of Te Anau. Here, you can leave your car and set off on the trail that starts at the lakefront Visitor Centre. The second entrance is via Rainbow Reach, a suspension bridge outside the town. You can drive up to it and leave your car in the car park in front of the bridge. This Collection starts from the first entrance to Te Anau.
Enjoy the hike!
