818 kilometres (508 mi). That is the length of the border between Germany and Austria. It’s the longest that Germany shares with a neighbouring country. However, for most of these kilometres, the border is not even recognisable as such, as it runs along the high mountains, between the great peaks of the Alps.
Various hiking trails lead across this ‘grüne Grenze’ (‘green border’), many of them old paths once used by smugglers. Numerous Alpine peaks lie exactly on the border and some even have two summit crosses, one for each nation. For example, the Kranzhorn in the Chiemgau Alps has a cross on the Bavarian side and right next to it one on the Tyrolean side. The border even runs through the kitchen of the Purtschellerhaus hut on the north side of the Hoher Göll.
It’s common to cross this border more often than you realise during a hike. The possible Tours in the mountains between Austria and Germany are hugely varied. This Collection gives you a small insight into the diversity of the region. Some are relatively easy hikes that are also popular with the locals for after-work jaunts or for admiring the sunset. The Tours to the Kranzhorn and the Spitzstein, in the Chiemgau Alps, are two such examples. Other Tours require mountaineering experience, sure-footedness and a head for heights. Sometimes a via ferrata is part of the adventure. This is the case for the ascent of the Hoher Göll and the hike along the Mittenwald Höhenweg.
All seven Tours in this Collection have one thing in common: you spend some of your time in Germany and some of your time in Austria. Sometimes you cross the border several times a day. Sometimes it is marked with a border stone, sometimes you are standing on the summit in two countries at the same time and sometimes you are perhaps not quite sure which side you are on. All of that doesn't matter because these hikes reveal the insignificance of borders when pitted against spectacular natural landscapes. Freedom extends far beyond human-drawn lines.
