Lac de Vouglans is the third-largest artificial lake in France, spanning 35 kilometres (21.7 mi). The construction of the dam of the same name in 1968 formed the lake. Although its creation results from human activity, the landscape remains wild and untamed. The trail winds through abundant natural wonders: through forests and cliffs, to stunning viewpoints, lakes and picturesque coves.
The GRP (Grand Randonnée de Pays) is undoubtedly the most renowned among the hiking trails in the area. Its waymarks are easily recognisable: distinctive yellow and red stripes. In this Collection, I suggest completing this 83-kilometre (51 mi) itinerary over four days. You can reach the starting point by taking the Mobigo Jura line 309 bus from Lons-le-Saunier, which is well connected by rail.
The trail begins in Pont-de-Poitte, where you'll encounter the impressive Saut de la Saisse and the Marmites des Géants. This rocky aquatic spectacle contributes to the lake's water flow from the Ain River. After traversing the picturesque countryside, the GRP meanders through forests for a significant portion of the route. The journey is a delightful mix of ascents, descents, beaches, cliffs and viewpoints, bringing diversity to the wooded landscapes. You'll find three bathing beaches along the lake: Surchauffant, Bellecin and Mercantile.
However, the delicate balance between the lake's natural environment and human activities, such as power generation or tourism, challenges the ecosystem. During summer, the lake's popularity can have unintended consequences. Local municipalities often ban wild camping in certain areas, so if you plan to spend the night in this way, make sure you check the current regulations. If only a few areas are off-limits during your trip, you can always find a different spot to camp under the starry sky.
Accommodation options, including lodges and campsites, are concentrated around strategic points along the lake, which I have selected as recommended stopovers.
No food stores along the GRP route exist, but several bars and beach restaurants are available to save you from carrying too much. Plan your meals accordingly and adjust the size of your backpack to accommodate the necessary amount of food.
I recommend visiting between May and September when accommodation and restaurants are open. Outside this period, especially in winter, the trails are still passable but you'll have to prepare for the lack of services. The area is ideal for hiking in spring and autumn, but the water is colder for your swim. In summer, the forest provides shade from the sun and the lake is a welcome refresher. The only drawback is that the areas around the beaches can be very busy.
In addition to your swimsuit, remember to choose the right clothes for the season and wear good hiking boots. Then you'll be ready to explore the trails and beaches of Lac de Vouglans.
