This adventure begins in Marseille in the south of France and follows the GR 98 in its entirety through this magnificent, diverse region. Over 74 kilometres (46 mi) divided into three stages, you'll spend a long weekend in this historic city, walking between the sea and mountains, and familiarising yourself with the local culture.
Before you leave the vibrant Phocaean city, it’s worth visiting the old port and the MUCEM. This imposing museum is the perfect introduction to the Mediterranean world and its many civilisations. The reconstructed prehistoric Cosquer cave is interesting too. Its entrance lies underwater within the Parc National des Calanques.
The official trail begins in the extreme south of Marseille, at the Madrague beach. You can reach this starting point from the city centre by bus line 9.
The many calanques – rocky inlets with steep limestone cliffs, bays and breathtaking views – immerse you in a Mediterranean atmosphere. You’ll hear the chirping of cicadas, feel the mistral wind and smell the maritime pines and salty air.
Wild camping and hiking at night are permitted in the national park. If you want to sleep in this natural sanctuary, you'll have to head for the only youth hostel, Cassis La Fontasse.
On the second day, the Sainte-Baume massif comes into view. This incredible mountain, dedicated to Mary Magdalene, is intimately linked to the history of Marseille. The first Christians to evangelise this part of southern France landed from Palestine at the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Marthe chose the town of Tarascon. Lazarus decided to settle in Marseille, and Mary Magdalene lived as a hermit in a cave on a mountain near the town. After her death, the mountain was named Sainte-Baume to honour her memory. This micro-adventure ends here, at this holy place. If you find this legend hard to believe, you should know that this is the story that is told in Provence.
The city of Marseille is France's third largest after Paris and Lyon. It's perfectly served. And so is its vicinity. From Nans-les-Pins, you'll easily find the bus link back to your starting point.
Due to its popularity, avoid this hike in summer. In spring and autumn, the paths are not as busy. You need to be an experienced hiker to take on the GR 98 so it's best not to choose this route if you’re a beginner. Make sure you have good walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen to protect you from the wind and sun.
Enjoy your hike!
