The Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) is a multi-use trail that connects the Irish and North Seas, crossing the Pennine range in north England. Travelling directly west to east, it’s 215 miles (346 km) of relatively flat terrain that takes you on a journey through historic towns and cities, and the quintessential British countryside.
You’ll explore many of the scenic waterways that span this coast to coast trail, hiking along canal ways and meandering rivers that are teeming with local flora and fauna. Stage 6 is a little more challenging as it crosses the wild and weathered landscape of the Peak District. For the budding wildlife enthusiast, you’ll pass by a number of reserves where you can take some time out bird and wildlife spotting. Most also have a visitor centre as well as a cafe, to refuel and rest weary legs.
The route breakdown is a suggestion for daily stages, with each finish location having accommodation and all necessary amenities. With numerous access points along the route, the full Tour is included below, so that you can pick and choose the sections and distance to suit a more personalised itinerary.
Spring would be a stunning time to head out on the TPT, flowering plants adding a quilt of varying colours across the countryside. Or autumn with its softer light and changing colours. Summer will be busier of course, so booking ahead for accommodation would be advisable. Whatever the season, do travel prepared for any weather, this is the north of England after all! Pack waterproofs, warm layers and sunscreen.
Sections nearer to urban areas are well surfaced and access is suitable for all, including families and wheelchair users, but further afield the surface can change depending on the weather, so robust hiking shoes with good grip are recommended. Most of the route is traffic free too where you can revel in the calming effect of the countryside, with the briefest of sections where you’ll need to travel roadside. Even when traversing through more urban areas, a lot of the path is contained within leafy corridors, almost blocking out the bustle of the city.
Accessibility to both Stockport and Hornsea is straightforward, being served by a local train service that connects to the wider national network, as well as bus services and ease of access by road. Similarly, many of the suggested start/finish towns are accessible by train and there are specific car parks dotted along the route for access to the TPT.
