The Berner Voralpenweg (Bern Pre-Alpine Trail) is a hike through diverse landscapes, which immerses you in the charming and characterful Swiss Pre-Alps. Spanning a distance of 62 kilometres (38 mi), the path links the village of Gstaad with the town of Spiez on Lake Thun in four distinct stages.
The trail meanders through spectacular landscapes, crossing verdant pastures, winding through ancient forests, ascending to the impressive Gandlouenegrat and descending to Rinderberg. From there, you'll be treated to expansive vistas over the Obersimmental, concluding your day's hike in Zweisimmen.
Continuing along historic routes, you’ll climb into alpine meadows and occasionally traverse the higher altitudes of Alpine zones. The route circles Seebergsee lake, delving into beautiful scenery, which transforms with each season.
As you progress, you’ll witness life in the Bernese foothills of the Alps. You’ll explore villages and narrow mountain paths that lead through the varied topography, eventually descending into the valley towards Oey. Along tranquil streams, you'll gain a unique perspective of the surrounding valley.
The final stage brings you back to the populated world. The route from Oey to Spiez is punctuated by historical sites, culminating on the shores of Lake Thun. There, amidst the shadows of castles and palaces, your hike reaches its peaceful conclusion.
From beginning to end, you'll traverse an area of Switzerland rich in ecological and cultural heritage. You'll tread well-worn paths and journey through a living mosaic waiting to be unveiled through the tales of hikers.
The start and end points of the route, as well as the individual stages, are easily accessible by bus, train or car. You’ll find various accommodation options near the stage destinations.
